Norris Tops Hungarian GP Practice Over Piastri
Lando Norris Tops Opening Practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix
Lando Norris edged out championship rival Oscar Piastri in the opening practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. With just a 16-point deficit to Piastri heading into Sunday's race at the Hungaroring, the final round before the summer break, the British driver marked an early statement by topping the time charts, beating Piastri by a mere 0.019 seconds.
Charles Leclerc took third place for Ferrari, finishing two-tenths off the pace but outshining his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who secured fifth. The seven-time world champion, boasting a record eight wins and nine pole positions in Hungary, was four-tenths behind Leclerc. Hamilton admitted that his car didn't "feel good" and even ran off the road at the first corner following a significant lock-up.
Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar separated the Ferrari duo, with British rookie Ollie Bearman securing sixth place for Haas. George Russell closed the practice session in eighth, narrowly ahead of four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Verstappen recently put an end to speculation about his future by committing to Red Bull for at least another season.
Norris Delivers an Early Statement
Norris, determined to make a strong comeback after a challenging Belgian Grand Prix where Piastri overtook him early on and secured a comfortable win, showcased his prowess at a circuit he declared as one of his favorites. Notably, Norris has never been out-qualified by a teammate in his six prior visits to the Hungaroring.
Antonelli Shows Promise Amidst Struggles
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who has struggled with just one point in his last seven appearances, showed a promising effort by finishing seventh, just half a tenth ahead of his teammate Russell.
Alonso Misses Session Due to Injury
Fernando Alonso missed the first practice session due to a back injury. Aston Martin is monitoring the 44-year-old’s condition to determine if he will be able to compete for the remainder of the weekend.
Looking Ahead
With Norris striking the first blow of the weekend, the stage is set for an exhilarating Hungarian Grand Prix as the championship contenders gear up for Sunday’s decisive race.
