Lando Norris Dominates Friday Practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris delivered a commanding performance in Friday’s practice sessions at the Hungarian Grand Prix, securing the fastest times in both runs and setting the stage for a critical showdown before Formula 1 heads into its summer break. Norris, who trails McLaren teammate and championship contender Oscar Piastri by 16 points, made an assertive statement with his speed at the Hungaroring—a circuit he has affectionately described as one of his favorites on the calendar.

In the opening practice, Norris edged Piastri by a razor-thin margin of 0.019 seconds. However, it was in the second session where he truly widened the gap, finishing an impressive 0.291 seconds ahead of his teammate. These results come as a rebound for Norris after a challenging Belgian Grand Prix last weekend, where rain-soaked conditions saw Piastri overtake him on the first racing lap en route to a decisive victory.

Despite a slight scare in the final turn during Friday’s second session—where Norris ran wide but expertly regained control—he maintained his dominance at a venue where he has never been out-qualified by a teammate during his previous six visits. His combined performances underline his determination to claw back points in the championship battle before the much-needed mid-season pause.

Leclerc Leads Ferrari’s Efforts; Hamilton Lags Behind

Charles Leclerc emerged as Norris’ closest challenger, finishing third for Ferrari, though still four-tenths off the McLaren driver’s pace. Meanwhile, his teammate Lewis Hamilton struggled to find form at a track where he holds an enviable record of eight wins and nine pole positions. The seven-time world champion ended the day six places behind Leclerc and described his Mercedes setup as suboptimal.

Hamilton’s frustrations included a lock-up that sent him off the road at Turn 1 during the opening session. With Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso taking fourth and fifth respectively, Hamilton was left trailing in their wake. Notably, Alonso returned to action in the second session after sitting out the first due to a back injury, showing little sign of impairment as he clocked strong laps.

Verstappen’s Troubles Continue

While Norris soared, reigning world champion Max Verstappen endured a troubled day, finishing a distant 14th in practice and over 1.1 seconds off the top time. Verstappen, who recently quashed speculation about his future by committing to Red Bull for another season, voiced frustrations with his car’s performance.

"I don't know what is going on," Verstappen admitted. "It is just undriveable."

The Dutchman’s struggles were compounded by a bizarre incident in which he threw a towel from his cockpit onto the track. Stewards issued a warning after deeming the towel a potential hazard, emphasizing that its presence could have contributed to the car being released in unsafe condition.

The Stage Is Set

With Norris showing early dominance and Verstappen facing uncharacteristic difficulties, the Hungarian Grand Prix is shaping up to be a thrilling chapter in the 2023 Formula 1 season. McLaren’s intra-team rivalry, Ferrari’s push for competitive form, and Hamilton’s fight to reclaim his Hungaroring dominance add layers of intrigue as drivers prepare for Sunday’s anticipated race under the summer sun.
