Fernando Alonso Makes Return for Hungarian GP Second Practice After Back Injury
Fernando Alonso Returns for Second Practice at Hungarian Grand Prix After Back Injury
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Fernando Alonso will rejoin his Aston Martin team for the second practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix after sitting out the opening session due to a back injury.
The 44-year-old Spaniard has been managing a muscular issue in his back since last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, throwing his participation in this event into question. He opted to step aside for Friday’s FP1 session, allowing reserve driver Felipe Drugovich to take his place. However, in a statement released ahead of the second practice, Aston Martin confirmed Alonso’s return to the cockpit of the AMR25.
"Fernando Alonso will be back in the AMR25 for FP2 this afternoon," the team’s statement read. "He chose to sit out the opening practice session to limit his time in the car as he manages a muscular injury in his back. Having undergone further treatment this morning and medically cleared by the FIA, Fernando will be back in the AMR25 alongside Lance Stroll."
Acknowledging Drugovich’s FP1 Contribution
The team also acknowledged Drugovich’s contributions during FP1: "Felipe Drugovich delivered a busy FP1 programme with Lance earlier today, collecting important data as the team continues to evaluate recent car updates."
The FP1 session saw Drugovich finish 16th, while Stroll managed to clock the 10th-fastest time. Alonso’s return for FP2 will be critical as the team continues preparations for Sunday’s race and works to incorporate recent updates to the car.
Alonso Eyes Competitive Result
Currently 15th in the drivers’ standings with 16 points so far this season, Alonso will hope to salvage a competitive result this weekend despite his recent injury concerns.
