The Dutchman’s win in Saturday’s sprint race boosted his lead by 26 points, with an additional two points added during Sunday’s Grand Prix. For context, a single race weekend allows a maximum of 25 points for victory, meaning Verstappen has now moved decisively out of reach of fourth-placed Mercedes driver George Russell.
The influential Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf made the situation explicit in its Sunday coverage: “Whoever still doubted it—Max Verstappen will drive for Red Bull Racing in 2026.”
The publication also highlighted the dead-end Mercedes and Wolff now face in their pursuit of Verstappen, observing that the Silver Arrows will likely have to explore other options for next season and beyond.
Impact on the Driver Market
The resolution of Verstappen’s contract situation will undoubtedly send ripples across the driver market. George Russell, whose own future with Mercedes remains unresolved, appeared to be the most vulnerable in the event of Verstappen exploring alternatives.
