Max Verstappen Delivers Red Bull’s First Win Under New Leadership at Belgian GP Sprint

Max Verstappen made it clear that Red Bull can always rely on him after delivering a crucial win in the Saturday sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix. The four-time Formula 1 champion wasted no time making an impression under new team principal Laurent Mekies, who stepped into the leadership role following the dismissal of long-time boss Christian Horner. Verstappen’s commanding drive marked the team’s first victory since Imola in May, providing a morale boost for Red Bull in the wake of its recent management restructure.

A Winning Drive in the Sprint Race

Starting second on the grid, Verstappen surged to the lead on the opening lap, fending off pressure from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to secure victory. Though the sprint race victory was worth only eight points in the driver standings, its significance extended well beyond the score sheet. The win underscored Verstappen’s unwavering commitment and cemented his position as Red Bull’s cornerstone during this pivotal transition period.

"The team can always count on me. They will always get my very best, whoever is in charge. They know that. I'm never holding back or anything," Verstappen emphasized to reporters after the race. "I'm always trying to give them the best possible result, and that's also what they pay me for. For sure, it's positive. We need, of course, positive energy, and that's a great start for us."

Adapting to New Leadership

With Mekies still acclimating to his position, Verstappen expressed confidence in the team's ability to adapt and move forward. He acknowledged that the process of change requires patience and collaboration, something that Mekies is actively embracing.

"It’s really early days, but so far, he’s very keen and very motivated, and that’s exactly what you want also," Verstappen said. "I got on very well with him. So, yeah, it’s been a very good start."

Looking ahead, Verstappen also offered insight into the gradual evolution Red Bull might undergo under Mekies’ leadership, stating:

"Then at one point, you come to conclusions and maybe you want to change something, and this is something that will happen over the coming weeks, months."

Red Bull’s Resilience Amid Change

With Red Bull seeking to restore its dominance and redefine its identity following the departure of Horner, Verstappen’s decisive sprint victory serves as an early but powerful statement that the team is poised to move forward with resilience—and with a champion they can count on.
