Red Bull’s Mekies: building Verstappen a fast car is the top priority
Laurent Mekies Focuses on Keeping Max Verstappen at Red Bull
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – New Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has made his mission clear since stepping into the role left vacant by the surprise departure of long-term boss Christian Horner: to deliver Max Verstappen a competitive car and quiet the swirling speculation about the reigning four-time world champion’s future with the team.
Red Bull’s competitive edge has dulled over the past year, sparking concerns among fans and pundits alike. Verstappen’s frustration has been evident, and recent underwhelming performances have further fueled rumors of the Dutch driver possibly activating clauses in his contract to seek a new team as early as next season. While insiders believe a departure before the 2026 season remains improbable, Verstappen himself didn’t mince words when addressing the topic, insisting this week that his commitment to Red Bull hinges on the team’s ability to provide him with a championship-caliber car.
Mekies Accepts the Challenge
For Mekies, the message is received loud and clear.
“In terms of priority, I’m sure Max wants a fast car,” Mekies told reporters on Friday. “If we get him a fast car, I’m sure it cancels out all the other considerations. The focus is very much on getting to know the team as quickly as possible, understanding where we can improve, and building the next step in competitiveness. The goal is simple: give him a car that makes staying an easy decision.”
The transition to new leadership came as a surprise to many, with Horner’s dismissal abruptly ending his record-breaking tenure as the longest-serving team principal in Formula 1. Mekies revealed that he himself was caught off guard by the sudden opportunity.
“I got a call a few hours before the news went public,” Mekies admitted. He recounted a conversation with Red Bull GmbH’s managing director Oliver Mintzlaff and motorsport advisor Helmut Marko. “They asked me if I’d be interested in the job, and honestly, it came completely out of the blue. I was in the UK at Racing Bulls at the time, and I needed a few hours to process it.”
Ultimately, however, it didn’t take long for him to embrace the challenge.
“It’s Red Bull. When they call, and they ask you to step in for such a role, how can you say no? It’s an honor and a privilege.”
Praise for Christian Horner
Despite the unexpected shift, Mekies praised Horner for his professionalism throughout the transition.
“He’s been nothing but supportive, even in an extremely difficult context for him,” Mekies said. “He was the first to call, the first to text. We exchanged messages again this morning, and that kind of support is very impressive given the circumstances.”
Mekies acknowledged that filling Horner’s shoes is no small task.
“Is there any way anyone can replace Christian? No. At least, certainly not me. He’s irreplaceable. What I bring, though, is a willingness to empower the incredible people on this team and harness our collective talent to create the next competitive advantage.”
Preparing for a New Era at Red Bull
Red Bull faces a pivotal moment in its history, as the team prepares for significant changes ahead of sweeping Formula 1 regulation updates. Next season will see Red Bull transition away from its title-winning Honda engine partnership. In its place, the team will debut power units developed entirely in-house at their UK facility in Milton Keynes, marking a monumental step in their bid to become fully self-reliant.
Mekies is optimistic about the challenge and believes the team is well-equipped to adapt to the evolving landscape of the sport.
“This is a unique opportunity to push forward,” he said. “We’re embarking on an unprecedented project, but I’m confident the team’s talent and vision will create something remarkable.”
Focus on Verstappen’s Success
As the new era for Red Bull begins, the focus remains firmly on the present objective: giving Verstappen the machinery he needs to succeed. For now, all eyes are on Mekies and his team to rise to the occasion.
