Lando Norris commends open champion Scottie Scheffler's honest reflections on success
Lando Norris Praises Scottie Scheffler’s Perspective on the Fleeting Nature of Success
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – Formula 1 contender Lando Norris has applauded Scottie Scheffler for his candid perspective on the fleeting satisfaction of success, following Scheffler's triumph at the Open Championship.
Days prior to his victory, the American golfing star made headlines with his forthright comments about the hollow nature of winning at the highest level. Speaking directly about the emotional void it can leave, Scheffler admitted:
"This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart."
He then added a sobering observation on the impermanence of victory, remarking:
"If I win, it's going to be awesome for two minutes."
Norris, no stranger to the emotional rollercoaster of elite competition, has been outspoken about his own mental health since joining Formula 1 in 2019. Most recently, the McLaren star experienced both the jubilation and subsequent letdown of success when he claimed victory in front of his home crowd at the British Grand Prix — a win he described as "everything I dreamed of."
Norris Reflects on Scheffler's Honesty
Following his eighth career Formula 1 win, which brought him within striking distance of his McLaren teammate and championship rival Oscar Piastri, Norris was asked about Scheffler's remarks. The young Brit strongly praised the golfer's willingness to share his authentic feelings.
"I was pretty low on Monday, for different reasons," Norris admitted. "To be honest, I quite liked what Scottie said. I respect that he's quite honest about his feelings. It’s refreshing to hear someone at the top of their game, performing almost at the level Tiger [Woods] did at times, talk about how fleeting those moments of success can be. It’s not the perspective you expect, and I found it relatable."
Norris admired how Scheffler's openness challenges traditional attitudes in professional sports that often shy away from vulnerability.
"I think the main takeaway is, just let the person be whatever they want to be, let them do whatever they want to do," Norris said. "He doesn't owe anyone a particular attitude or approach. He lives very much his own way, and I think it’s cool to see someone like that achieving so much while having that mindset."
Inspired by Scheffler’s Humility
In a hyper-competitive golf realm dominated by the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Jordan Spieth, Norris was struck by Scheffler’s humility amid his success.
"Scheffler is just another level ahead of the competition, and for him to say something like that, it’s amazing. It shows his individuality, and I really respect that. You don’t have to fit into a mold to succeed, and that’s inspiring."
As an avid golf fan, Norris couldn’t resist mentioning his personal favorites – namely, his unwavering support for McIlroy and fellow Brits like Justin Rose. Yet, the Formula 1 driver made clear that Scheffler’s forthrightness had earned his admiration.
"I thought it was fascinating and cool to see someone performing at such an incredibly high level come out and say what he did," Norris concluded. "It’s a reminder that even at the very top, success is a complex and sometimes bittersweet experience. That kind of honesty makes you appreciate what these athletes go through even more."
With both men excelling in their respective sports, Norris and Scheffler serve as poignant reminders that even the sweetest victories come with their share of challenges.
