McLaren car collection heads to auction, expected to reach $70 Million
Mansour Ojjeh’s Legendary McLaren Collection Heads to Auction
A unique and pristine collection of 20 McLaren road cars, previously belonging to the late Mansour Ojjeh, is set to hit the auction block with high expectations of fetching more than $70 million. Ojjeh, the former co-owner of the Formula One team and a key figure in McLaren's history, left behind an extraordinary array of vehicles that are now being presented to the market.
The Collection: A Tribute to McLaren’s Legacy
Tom Hartley Jnr, a renowned classic and historic car dealer, made the announcement on Sunday, revealing that he had been appointed by Ojjeh's family to manage the sale. This significant collection features the very last McLaren F1 model ever built, finished in a unique 'Yquem' color, later renamed 'Mansour Orange' by McLaren, which has driven just over 1,800 kilometers.
The McLaren F1 sportscar, produced in a limited run of 106 units between 1992 and 1998, is a standout in the collection. A 1995 McLaren F1 with less than 390 kilometers on the clock previously sold for $20.4 million at an auction in Pebble Beach, California, in 2021.
Apart from the F1 and a P1 GTR, the rest of the cars are in mint condition, maintained by the manufacturer, and painted in the distinctive 'Mansour Orange'. They were last showcased at the Bahrain F1 circuit.
Zak Brown Reflects on Ojjeh’s Impact
"Mansour was a founding father of McLaren as we know it today," stated McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. "A massively passionate racer and automotive enthusiast and no bigger fan of McLaren. His collection is very special, I'm not aware of anything else that compares with it," he added, noting his own impressive car collection.
Ojjeh’s Influence on Formula 1 and McLaren
Ojjeh, a Paris-born Saudi businessman, took over as CEO of Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG) from his father and began sponsoring the Williams F1 team in 1979. He later acquired a stake in McLaren in 1984, financing the development of TAG-Porsche engines that powered the team to two constructors' titles and three drivers' championships. Ojjeh, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 68, was instrumental in the founding of McLaren Automotive along with Ron Dennis.
A Historic Auction
"Being entrusted with the sale of Mansour Ojjeh's McLaren collection is akin to handling Enzo Ferrari's Ferraris or Ferdinand Porsche's Porsches," said Hartley. "This is the most significant McLaren road car collection ever assembled, and I sincerely hope it is acquired by a single buyer."
