Lando Norris shines as McLaren secures stunning 1-2 finish at Austrian GP
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella Lauds Lando Norris' Resilience & Character
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has lauded Lando Norris’ resilience and character following the Briton's masterful performance at the Austrian Grand Prix. In a defining moment for the team, Norris rebounded from the disappointment of a collision-induced retirement in Canada two weeks ago to lead home a commanding McLaren 1-2 finish on Sunday.
Although pleased with Norris’ progression, Stella emphasized that the 23-year-old’s journey to becoming a complete Formula 1 driver is ongoing.
“The outcome [in Canada] was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race — that was simply a misjudgment,” Stella remarked. “The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character. The speed is there -- Lando pole position in Monaco … he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria.”
Norris battled his teammate Oscar Piastri throughout the race, including a tense moment at Turn 4 that required nerves of steel to maintain composure. The Brit’s victory trimmed the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers’ standings to just 15 points as the duo prepares for Norris’ home race at Silverstone next weekend.
McLaren's Unity Despite Canada Fallout
Stella reflected on the team’s handling of the fallout from Canada — where Norris and Piastri clashed — underscoring McLaren’s robust internal resolve.
“We just have to polish a few things in executions and results, which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger,” Stella said.
Drama at Turn 4: Piastri’s Apology
Still, Sunday’s result wasn’t devoid of drama. Piastri locked up at Turn 4 during the race, narrowly avoiding contact with his teammate. The Australian rookie, showing maturity beyond his years, took responsibility immediately after the race.
Stella relayed the details: “There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close, and that was in Turn 4 when Oscar locked up, and he ended up very close to Lando. We gave Oscar this feedback, and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line, he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in Turn 4.”
Norris Poised for Back-to-Back Victories
Norris, already a seven-time race winner, has yet to secure consecutive victories in a single season — a milestone Stella believes is well within reach.
“In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course,” Stella said. “There is absolutely no reason why not — the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in.”
While Stella pointed out that ultimately, the success isn’t just about individual accolades, he made clear where his priorities lie.
“The most important thing is the back-to-back victory is for McLaren.”
Looking Ahead to Silverstone
As Norris prepares for his home race at Silverstone, the team appears to be firing on all cylinders, proving that the setbacks of Montreal have only deepened McLaren’s resolve. With Piastri also demonstrating maturity and pace, the pairing is shaping up to be one of the fiercest intra-team rivalries of the season. Fans can no doubt look forward to fireworks at the British Grand Prix as McLaren aims to continue its momentum on all fronts.
