George Russell rockets to the top in Austrian GP FP1; Alex Dunne impresses in McLaren debut
George Russell Leads FP1 at Austrian Grand Prix
George Russell carried his winning momentum from Canada into the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, posting the fastest time in Friday’s first practice session at the Red Bull Ring. The Mercedes driver clocked in at 1:05.542, narrowly besting championship rival Max Verstappen by just 0.065 seconds.
Russell and Verstappen Set the Pace
Russell, who clinched victory in Montreal two weeks ago, once again showed his form as he and Verstappen—racing’s two front-runners in recent weeks—set the early pace on the short but demanding Spielberg circuit.
Piastri Continues to Impress
Completing the top three was McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. The championship leader displayed solid pace in FP1, trailing Russell and Verstappen but maintaining the slight edge over his competition. However, the spotlight also shone brightly on Piastri’s temporary teammate, Alex Dunne.
Alex Dunne Shines in Dream Debut
The Irish youngster stepped into the McLaren cockpit in place of Lando Norris for the session and finished an impressive fourth, just seven-tenths of a second behind Piastri. As Dunne wrapped up the career-defining moment, his gratitude and emotion were evident as he addressed the team over the radio:
"I want to say a massive thank you. You made a little boy's dream come true, and this was definitely the best day of my life."
Rivalry and Inspiration Set the Stage
Although it’s only the beginning of the weekend, all eyes are now on Russell and Verstappen as they continue their enthralling rivalry in Austria. For McLaren, the combination of Piastri’s consistency and Dunne’s dream debut serves as nothing short of inspiration heading into the rest of the race weekend.
