Charles Leclerc Voices Concerns Over Ferrari’s 2026 F1 Car

Charles Leclerc has candidly shared his reservations about Ferrari's 2026 Formula 1 car after his first experience behind the wheel of its virtual prototype. The Monegasque driver’s comments reflect growing concerns about the sport's sweeping regulatory changes set to take effect next season and their potential to impact the quality of racing.

Speaking after his session in Ferrari’s simulator at its Maranello headquarters, Leclerc admitted the initial version of the 2026 car was far from inspiring.

"Let's say it's not the most enjoyable race car I've driven so far, but we are still in a moment where the project is relatively new," he said.

Regulatory Changes and Technical Challenges

Formula 1's upcoming regulations will push for a 50/50 energy split between combustion engines and electric power, requiring a nearly 300% increase in battery capacity compared to current specifications. To meet these demands, aerodynamic changes aim to drastically reduce drag, making cars more energy-efficient but at the cost of reduced downforce and slower lap times.

With all 10 teams beginning to allocate significant resources to their 2026 programs, Leclerc acknowledged the challenges ahead but admitted the car's current state left much to be desired.

"My hope relies on the fact that it will evolve quite a bit in the next few months, but it's no secret that I think the regulations for next year are going to be a lot more... probably less enjoyable for drivers to drive," he said.

While emphasizing his professional commitment to maximizing the car’s potential, Leclerc left no doubt about his current sentiment.

"Do I enjoy it? Probably not," he stated bluntly.

Energy Management and Concerns About Racing Quality

A central concern among drivers and teams is the increased emphasis on energy management under the new rules. Critics speculate this focus could detract from the excitement of on-track battles if drivers are forced to prioritize preserving battery life over racing aggressively.

Leclerc echoed these apprehensions, citing both the reduced downforce and the energy management challenges as factors contributing to his unease:

"I think both -- probably the second one a bit more than the first. It's just strange," he admitted.

The 26-year-old also questioned how the new regulations might impact the spectacle of racing:

"I just don't imagine yet how racing will look like and how cool the overtaking will be next year with this new regulation. So this is something that I know people, teams, and the FIA are aware of, and there's probably some work to be done on that. I don't know how much it will change from now on though."

Ferrari's Development and Focus on Future Designs

Leclerc is not the only Ferrari driver casting a critical eye toward the future. His teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, has yet to try the 2026 car in the simulator but is already focused on addressing issues with its 2025 predecessor.

"I think in the background we're working hard with Fred [Vasseur, team principal] and the team to try to implement changes and improvements so that we can have long-term success," Hamilton said recently. "Working with Loic [Serra, technical director] and the whole crew on next year's front suspension and rear suspension, addressing the understeer issues, making sure that we don't continue, making sure we learn from the previous years and also we learn from this year so that next year is the best that we've ever had. That's my main focus."

Uncertain Path to 2026

The lead-up to the 2026 regulation changes remains fraught with questions and uncertainties, with Ferrari working to adapt and evolve its design in hopes of avoiding setbacks. For Leclerc and Hamilton, the coming months will be critical as they influence the car's development and seek solutions for the challenges posed by the sport’s changing landscape.

While optimism exists within every team, it remains to be seen whether Formula 1's new era can deliver on promises of sustainability without sacrificing the on-track thrills that define the sport.
