Formula 1 Extends Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal Through 2035

Formula 1 has cemented its presence in Montreal by announcing a four-year extension to its existing agreement with the promoters of the Canadian Grand Prix. The deal, revealed on Tuesday, ensures that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will continue to host the prestigious race through the 2035 season.

Previously contracted until 2031, the new agreement now extends the event’s future by an additional four years, reaffirming Montreal’s central role on the Formula 1 calendar. On the heels of last weekend’s 54th Canadian Grand Prix, the race holds the distinction of being the longest-running event outside Europe, a testament to its enduring legacy and popularity.

History and Significance of the Canadian Grand Prix

The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which first hosted the Canadian Grand Prix in 1978, remains a historic and iconic venue in the sport. The extended deal is a product of collaboration between Formula 1, the race promoter Octane Racing Group, and both the federal and Quebec governments. In addition to securing the Montreal race, F1 announced a long-term extension of its media rights deal with Bell Media, further bolstering the sport’s presence in Canada.

Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1’s Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the news with enthusiasm, emphasizing the historical significance of the Canadian Grand Prix:

"As Formula 1 celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is fitting that we have announced an extension with the Canadian Grand Prix, a race that has such incredible history in our sport and is named after a true legend in Gilles Villeneuve," Domenicali said.

He also praised Montreal’s vibrant atmosphere and its passionate fan base:

"Montréal is an incredible city, full of energy and passionate fans, and I am delighted to confirm that we will continue racing here through to the 2035 season and that our media rights deal with Bell Media is also extending in the long term."

Domenicali took the opportunity to recognize the efforts behind the event's continuous success:

"I would like to thank the promoter, Octane Racing Group, for their continued efforts in upgrading this iconic venue in recent years, and all local, regional, and national political stakeholders who have worked closely together to make this event what it is today."

A Heartfelt Thank You to Fans

In a heartfelt message to fans, Domenicali added:

"I would also like to thank our incredible Canadian fans. I look forward to creating more unforgettable moments in Montréal with you over the next 10 years."

A Bright Future for the Canadian Grand Prix

The announcement solidifies Montreal's status as a cornerstone of the Formula 1 calendar, combining thrilling on-track action with the city’s electric energy and enthusiastic fan support. With Formula 1’s history-rich celebration of its 75th anniversary aligning with this deal, fans can expect even more high-octane moments at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in the years to come.

As the Canadian Grand Prix continues to evolve, this partnership strengthens Formula 1’s ties to Canada and promises to build on the legacy of Gilles Villeneuve, one of the sport's most cherished names. The next decade looks bright for motorsport enthusiasts in Montreal and beyond.
