George Russell Reflects on First Win of 2025, Eyes Formula 1 Title

George Russell, fresh off his first win of the season in Canada, believes he’s driving better than ever and feels prepared to chase a Formula 1 title with Mercedes. However, the Briton admits that the championship remains a long shot, requiring a combination of consistency and rival missteps for things to fall in his favor.

Currently fourth in the standings, Russell trails McLaren’s championship leader Oscar Piastri by 62 points after 10 of the 24 scheduled rounds. Piastri extended his lead after a chaotic weekend in Montreal, where his teammate Lando Norris retired following a collision between the two McLaren drivers. Meanwhile, Red Bull's Max Verstappen occupies third overall, keeping pace with Russell despite McLaren's dominant machinery.

Russell Analyzes the Championship Race

"I don't really know how Max and I are so close to those two [McLaren drivers] because they clearly have the most dominant car," Russell said, reflecting on the championship landscape. "I think the two of us have been very consistent and getting the maximum result from our packages week in, week out. But I can't imagine them to continue throwing away points in the manner they're doing."

Russell, whose Mercedes contract runs through 2025, remains optimistic about his future in Formula 1. He emphasized that his focus is on capitalizing on opportunities like the one in Canada if McLaren continues to falter. "Of course, we hope that continues to be the case, but I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We'll only be there if results like today continue or things like today continue to happen."

Confidence in His Position at Mercedes

While rumors swirl about potential driver moves—including the possibility of Mercedes courting four-time champion Max Verstappen—Russell remains unfazed and confident in his position. Sunday's victory, along with consistent performances, has bolstered his belief in securing a favorable renewal, though he doesn’t feel rushed.

"I know I'm going to be on the grid next year. I feel that I'm driving better than ever. I still feel I've got more in the tank," Russell stated firmly. "I feel ready to fight for a world championship."

Russell also made it clear that he isn’t exploring options outside Mercedes, reiterating the mutual confidence between himself and the team. "There haven't been any hard feelings with any of the talks that have been going around, especially around Max," he added.

"If every driver had no contract for next year, Max would be number one for every single team. And that's understandable. But ultimately, there are two seats for every race team. I know if I continue to perform as I'm doing, my position would not be under threat whatsoever. So, I feel in a good place."

Praise for Mercedes and Partnership with Kimi Antonelli

Russell praised Mercedes' development and his growing partnership with rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, who claimed an impressive third-place finish in Montreal. At just 18 years old, Antonelli has shown remarkable promise, and Russell highlighted the potential their pairing has for the team's future success.

"Why would you want to change something that's working?" Russell concluded, cementing his belief in the current lineup’s stability.

Focused on Opportunities Amid an Unpredictable Season

Though the championship may feel out of reach for now, Russell's blend of confidence and renewed focus assures Mercedes that their star driver is ready to seize any opportunity to fight for glory amid the unpredictable world of Formula 1.
