Miami Grand Prix Secures Record Extension Until 2041

MIAMI, FL – The Miami Grand Prix has cemented its place on the Formula 1 calendar for nearly two more decades, as F1 announced a significant contract extension on Friday that will keep the race in South Florida until 2041.

Miami’s Rapid Rise in Formula 1

Debuting in 2022 as part of a deal initially set to run through 2031, Miami’s F1 race has quickly evolved into a cornerstone event for the sport. With the impending fourth running of the race at the unique circuit circling the iconic Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, the extension underscores Formula 1's deepening commitment to its flourishing U.S. fanbase.

The sport’s recent surge in American interest has been propelled in no small part by the success of Netflix’s groundbreaking docuseries Drive to Survive, which has catapulted F1 into the U.S. sporting mainstream.

Formula 1 Leadership on Miami’s Role

F1’s CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted Miami's pivotal role in the sport's expansion efforts during a press conference marking the announcement. "Miami has become one of the most important pillars for growth in this country," Domenicali stated, underscoring the race’s essential role in the aggressive push to solidify F1’s foothold in the United States.

Longest-Running F1 Contract

The Miami Grand Prix now holds the distinction of the longest-running contract for any race in F1, surpassing Melbourne (whose deal runs until 2037), as well as flagship European events at Silverstone and Monza, both under agreement until 2034.

The U.S. is the only country currently hosting three F1 races, with Miami joined by the long-established United States Grand Prix at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and the brand-new-to-2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Austin, credited with reviving F1’s presence in the U.S. a decade ago, retains its contract until 2026.

Impact on Other U.S. Races

Miami’s long-term commitment is expected to further raise questions regarding the future of COTA’s event—a race that laid the groundwork for the sport’s U.S. resurgence.

Liberty Media’s American Expansion

F1’s U.S.-based owners, Liberty Media, have driven the rapid growth of the sport Stateside. The record-length deal for Miami speaks volumes about the potential Liberty sees in continuing to build momentum in the American market.

A Bright Future for Miami Grand Prix

With fans flocking to the unique Hard Rock Stadium layout and a burgeoning love affair with the sport across the States, the Miami Grand Prix looks set to remain a showcase event for Formula 1’s American expansion for many years to come.
