Red Bull driver swap: Tsunoda in, Lawson out

Red Bull has confirmed a significant driver change ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix: Yuki Tsunoda will replace Liam Lawson, a decision described as "purely sporting" to address the team's struggling RB21 car. This switch comes after Lawson, with just 11 prior F1 starts, was unable to meet expectations in his latest races.
Liam Lawson, initially brought in to replace Sergio Pérez, failed to deliver the desired results, especially in the Chinese Grand Prix where he qualified last, sparking the change. Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner, stated, "It has been difficult to see Liam struggle with the RB21 at the first two races... we have collectively taken the decision to make an early switch."
Horner emphasized the importance of Tsunoda's experience, calling it crucial for improving the car's performance. Tsunoda, who debuted with Red Bull's second team in 2021, will now race alongside reigning world champion Max Verstappen. This promotion coincides with his return to the Suzuka Circuit for his home GP, an exciting debut for the Japanese driver.
Sources disclosed that Red Bull's engine partner, Honda, played a role in facilitating this swap, aligning with their upcoming transition to Aston Martin's exclusive supplier in 2026.
Lawson will move back to the Racing Bulls junior team, where he previously filled in for Daniel Ricciardo. Horner explained, "We have a duty of care to protect and develop Liam... it makes sense to act quickly so Liam can gain experience."
Statistically, Tsunoda has had a competitive edge over Lawson in previous matchups, often outqualifying him and scoring more total points. This marks a rare occurrence, as multiple teammates alongside a defending world champion are uncommon; the last instance was Nelson Piquet in 1984.
Overall, Red Bull has adjusted their strategy, hoping Tsunoda's expertise will navigate their car improvements, expressing optimism about this new team dynamic.
