Haas' remarkable comeback at Chinese GP praised by Ocon and Bearman
Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman praised the Haas team for unlocking pace in the VF-25 that enabled both drivers to score points at the Chinese Grand Prix. Following a disappointing opening weekend in Australia, Haas rebounded with both drivers finishing in the top 10.
Initially, Ocon and Bearman finished P7 and P10, respectively, but were later promoted to P5 and P8 after disqualifications ahead of them. This resulted in a combined 14 points for the team.
Ocon, who started 11th, used a strategy of starting with medium Pirelli compounds before switching mid-race. He gained positions on Racing Bulls drivers and others, managing to stay ahead comfortably. Ocon reflected:
“It was not many days ago that we were dead last in Melbourne and it was looking difficult. We discussed everything on where to unlock that performance from the car. It’s an amazing turnaround from the team. I’m proud of everyone back in Maranello and Banbury. We’ve made it work today and it’s great to see, so hopefully, this is only the beginning.”
Bearman took a different approach, starting on hard tires before switching to mediums for the final stages, a strategy similar to Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, whom Bearman outpaced late in the race. Bearman commented:
“It was a really good day. I’m super-happy with the result. I did not expect to score points today but the car was fantastic. Everything I was doing worked and that’s always a nice feeling. The team have done a great job. The turnaround from yesterday – I’m really proud of them and a huge credit to them.”
Haas' significant improvement is a promising development, though Ocon cautions that they must maintain their performance.
“The confidence is not yet there because it is only race two. We need to stay on top of what we are doing, focus on ourselves, optimise what we have.”
Both drivers are optimistic about the future, emphasizing the need for continued improvement and consistency.
