Lando Norris prepares for intense championship duel with McLaren teammate Piastri
Lando Norris is looking forward to the exciting challenge of competing against his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, for the Formula 1 drivers' title. Norris stated that McLaren is prepared for any arising tension. Piastri secured pole position and led a McLaren one-two finish at the Chinese Grand Prix, following Norris’s victory in Australia.
In Shanghai, Norris admitted his car lacked the pace to catch Piastri, but he was content with finishing second ahead of Mercedes' George Russell despite brake issues. The Briton foresees more intense competition with Piastri as the season progresses.
"I think we're both excited -- probably nervous and excited at the same time," Norris said. "But we're ready. We know that as much as we work together and we have a good time and enjoy ourselves, we both know we want to try and beat each other and show who's best. And that's inevitable."
Norris currently leads the drivers' standings with 44 points, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen by eight points, and remains the bookmakers' favorite to win the championship. Piastri is ten points behind Norris after a ninth-place finish in Australia due to a costly slide.
Despite Verstappen's dominance last year, Norris and Piastri accumulated six wins, securing the constructors' championship for McLaren. Norris emphasized the significance of teamwork to fend off competitors while still vying for individual wins.
"I think we both achieved something better this weekend because of that [help]," Norris added. "And we'll continue to do that. Like Oscar said, at any point other teams can find something ... They can catch up quicker than you think, just like we did last year. We also have to think as a team and keep pushing the team forward."
As the season progresses, the McLaren duo is focused on balancing their individual ambitions with the overall progress of the team.
