Eddie Jordan-led group acquires London Irish rugby club
Former Formula 1 team owner and Irish businessman Eddie Jordan has led a consortium to purchase the London Irish rugby club, over a year after the team's suspension for financial difficulties.
A consortium led by former Formula 1 team owner and Irish businessman Eddie Jordan has successfully acquired the London Irish rugby club. The purchase comes over a year after the Premiership team was suspended from all rugby activities due to its inability to pay players, leading to administration in June 2023.
Jordan, a former racing driver and TV presenter, established the consortium Jordan Associates to facilitate the acquisition. The club, which was founded in 1898, confirmed the news on Wednesday.
"The Jordan Associates team will now turn its attention to negotiating a full and sustainable return for London Irish to competitive rugby, hand-in-hand with London Irish's supporter base," the club said in a statement. Financial details of the purchase were not disclosed.
Kyle Jordan, Eddie's youngest son and a senior partner in the consortium, emphasized the importance of engaging the global Irish diaspora to bolster the club's brand. "Our investors bring not just financial backing but a profound passion for rugby and a commitment to the community," he stated.
London Irish, double winners of the RFU Championship, made a significant move to Brentford's Premier League home ground in 2020, after two decades in Reading.
