The FIA has homologated a new 6-meter high debris fence ahead of the F1 2025 season to enhance safety at high-risk areas on circuits. Learn more about the latest safety innovation.

FIA Homologates New 6-Meter Debris Fence for F1 2025 Safety

Safety remains a top priority in motorsport, with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) continuously working to enhance the protection of drivers, trackside personnel, and spectators. The latest development in this ongoing effort is the homologation of a new 6-meter high debris fence, designed to improve safety in high-risk areas of racing circuits.

FIA Approves Taller Debris Fence for Enhanced Circuit Safety

Developed by Swiss company Geobrugg, the newly homologated debris fence is specifically designed for areas with higher safety concerns, such as high-speed corners, steep elevations, and spectator grandstands that may be vulnerable to debris from accidents. The new safety measure ensures that circuits meet the highest standards for protection while maintaining optimal visibility for fans.

Under FIA regulations, all new circuits must implement this homologated debris fence, while existing Grade 1 circuits will be required to install the approved fencing whenever an old one is damaged or needs replacement. Grade 2 circuits will need to comply with this standard starting in 2026.

Geobrugg Fence Sets New Benchmark in FIA Safety Standards

Several circuits, including Suzuka, Bahrain, Monza, Interlagos, and Fuji, already use 6-meter high fences. However, these fences have not been officially tested under the rigorous safety criteria required for FIA homologation.

The Geobrugg fence is the first of its kind to meet the FIA’s Standard 3502-2018, following an extensive series of crash tests. These tests included launching a 780 kg sphere at 60 kph from a sledge and simulating a full-size car impact at 120 kph. The fence successfully contained the impact within a strict 3-meter impact zone, demonstrating its effectiveness in extreme crash scenarios.

Enhanced Spectator Experience with Improved Visibility

In addition to offering superior protection, the Geobrugg fence has been designed with spectators in mind. The updated design includes an increase in cable spacing above a height of 3 meters, reducing visual obstruction while still providing effective debris containment. This improvement ensures fans can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the racing action while benefiting from advanced safety measures.

Industry Experts Praise FIA’s Commitment to Safety

Jochen Braunwarth, Director of Motorsport Solutions at Geobrugg, emphasized the significance of this development:

“Our aim to keep spectators, workers, and officials safe on a race circuit has taken another step in the right direction. The increased height of the debris fence provides a higher level of safety against flying debris that could potentially enter grandstands or other spectator areas.

Being close to the action and safety is a delicate balance, and in many cases, spectators have been exposed to additional risks compared to other areas. This additional risk has now been contained with a new, higher solution providing protection against flying debris from crashing cars.”

FIA Continues Advancing Safety in Formula 1 and Motorsport

The homologation of this advanced debris fence is part of the FIA’s broader initiative to continuously refine and implement cutting-edge safety solutions in Formula 1 and other motorsport categories. With new and existing circuits required to adopt the FIA-approved safety fencing, this marks a significant step forward in ensuring that racing remains both thrilling and safe for all involved.

As the Formula 1 2025 season approaches, the implementation of these safety measures highlights the governing body’s proactive approach to mitigating risks and maintaining the highest standards in motorsport safety.
