Alpine has officially announced the addition of Japanese racing driver Ryo Hirakawa to its team for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Hirakawa will serve as a reserve and test driver, bringing extensive motorsport experience to the Enstone-based squad. His signing aligns with Alpine's strategic plans as speculation swirls regarding Franco Colapinto's future with the team.
Ryo Hirakawa: A Driver with Proven Pedigree
The 30-year-old Hirakawa boasts an impressive track record, including winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2022 as part of Toyota Gazoo Racing's hypercar lineup. He also clinched the World Endurance Championship in 2022 and 2023 and earned third place in Japan's Super Formula series.
Hirakawa's achievements extend to the Super GT 500 class, where he consistently performed as a frontrunner, securing multiple runner-up finishes and winning the title outright in 2017.
Path to Formula 1
Hirakawa's F1 journey began with McLaren, where he joined their driver development program in 2023. He participated in Testing of a Previous Car (TPC) sessions at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and later conducted young driver running at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
In a move reflecting his rising reputation, Hirakawa also tested for Haas following Toyota's partnership with the American team, further solidifying his connections within the F1 paddock.
Key Role at Alpine in 2025
Hirakawa’s responsibilities with Alpine will include simulator work, TPC sessions, and a highlight moment of driving in front of his home crowd at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, scheduled as the third round of the 2025 season.
“It is an honor to join BWT Alpine Formula One Team as a Test and Reserve Driver for the 2025 season,” Hirakawa said. “Driving in Formula 1 is the pinnacle for any race driver, and I am excited to perform in Free Practice 1 at my home Grand Prix, as well as supporting the team in testing programs. I look forward to contributing to a successful season.”
Alpine's Strategic Vision
Team Principal Oli Oakes praised Hirakawa’s addition, stating, “His diverse racing experience enhances our talent pool. His contributions in simulator development and on-track testing will play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s success for 2025.”
Alpine’s partnership with Toyota, which also collaborates with HiTech in Formula 2 and Formula 3, underscores the synergy between Hirakawa’s experience and the team’s future ambitions.
Speculation Surrounding Franco Colapinto
Amidst the announcement, rumors have emerged about Franco Colapinto potentially joining Alpine’s F1 roster. While Jack Doohan remains under contract for 2025, his performance during his debut season will likely determine his long-term prospects.
