Wolff Clarifies Key Russell, Antonelli Contract Details Ahead of F1 2025

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shed light on the “very complicated” contract situations surrounding George Russell and Kimi Antonelli as the team prepares for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Both drivers are currently confirmed for the upcoming season, but Wolff indicated that Mercedes holds options allowing for extended deals beyond 2025.

Mercedes F1 2025 Driver Pairing: Russell and Antonelli

With Lewis Hamilton departing for Ferrari, Mercedes promoted Kimi Antonelli, a rising star from their junior program, to partner George Russell for the 2025 campaign. Antonelli’s Formula 2 rookie season impressed the team, leading to his promotion as Hamilton’s successor.

Russell, a graduate of the Mercedes junior program himself, now assumes the role of the senior driver. While reports have suggested that both drivers’ contracts only extend through the 2025 season, Wolff confirmed that the team has built-in options to secure their services for a longer period.

Toto Wolff Explains Contract Flexibility

Speaking to the media, Wolff addressed the specifics of Mercedes' approach to driver contracts. “These two are the future,” Wolff stated. “They have been and will be Mercedes drivers, and therefore, we have contracts with George and Kimi that go much longer, which are very complicated in terms of options.”

Wolff also highlighted the high-pressure environment of Mercedes, which has historically favored shorter contracts for drivers, even for a seven-time World Champion like Lewis Hamilton. “This is a pressure cooker. Mercedes always has been a pressure cooker, but this is where we stand as a team today,” he added. “We want to go with these two.”

Faith in the Future: Russell and Antonelli

When asked specifically about Antonelli’s deal, which was announced as a one-year contract for 2025, Wolff emphasized the importance of trust and adaptability. “I think most important is to see how George and Kimi settle in,” he said. “I see no reason at this stage not to give them the faith and trust of going forward.”

Wolff reiterated that Mercedes’ decision to pair Russell and Antonelli reflects the team’s long-term vision. “We wouldn’t have gone with this lineup if we didn’t believe 100% that they are the best choice for ourselves,” he explained.

Looking Ahead to F1 2025

As Mercedes enters a new chapter without Lewis Hamilton, the team is betting on its youthful driver lineup to deliver results in a highly competitive environment. With the contracts providing flexibility and the team expressing full confidence in Russell and Antonelli, Mercedes’ strategy for 2025 appears firmly focused on both immediate performance and long-term growth.
