FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem faces criticism from F1 drivers and former champions over his approach to governance, raising questions about his leadership ahead of re-election in 2025.

Ben Sulayem’s Leadership Under Fire

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has come under scrutiny from Formula 1 drivers and industry veterans after dismissing concerns raised by the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA). The drivers called for greater transparency and respect, only to be met with a blunt response from the governing body’s head.

F1 Drivers Demand Respect and Transparency

In a formal letter, F1 drivers requested clarity on the allocation of fines and criticized the FIA's handling of swearing, jewelry restrictions, and other regulations. They also urged Ben Sulayem to adopt a more respectful tone when addressing drivers publicly or privately. However, the FIA president dismissed these concerns, stating, “Let them go and concentrate on what they do best, which is race.”

David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan Speak Out

Former F1 driver David Coulthard criticized Ben Sulayem’s response on the Formula For Success podcast, calling it condescending and counterproductive. “That’s exactly the sort of response that pisses people off nowadays,” Coulthard remarked, emphasizing that the drivers’ opinions are integral to the sport’s success.

Coulthard added that during his racing career, team leaders like Frank Williams and Christian Horner never treated him or other drivers like children, even in challenging situations. “The Drivers’ Championship is what gets all the publicity. To dismiss the drivers’ opinions is a disservice to the sport,” he said.

Former F1 team principal Eddie Jordan echoed Coulthard’s sentiments, warning that Ben Sulayem’s approach could harm his re-election bid in 2025. Jordan urged the FIA president to engage in dialogue with drivers, suggesting, “He should open a dialogue or meet with selected representatives like Lewis [Hamilton] or Alonso to resolve these issues.”

The Growing Rift Between FIA and Drivers

The standoff between the FIA and F1 drivers highlights growing tensions within the sport’s governance. Jordan likened the situation to a conflict where lack of communication exacerbates divisions. “Dialogue is essential to avoid these standoffs,” he said, calling for a resolution to the ongoing disputes.

Ben Sulayem’s Tenure and Future Challenges

Ben Sulayem, who succeeded Jean Todt as FIA president in December 2021, has faced multiple controversies during his tenure. As he prepares for re-election in 2025, the pressure to address drivers’ concerns and foster collaboration within the sport will likely intensify.

Conclusion

The tension between F1 drivers and the FIA underscores a critical need for transparency and mutual respect in the sport’s governance. Whether Ben Sulayem can bridge this divide ahead of the 2025 elections remains to be seen. For now, the call for dialogue and accountability grows louder within the Formula 1 community.
