Discover how James Hinchcliffe transitioned from an IndyCar driver to a respected Formula 1 commentator, sharing his journey and insights into motorsport broadcasting.

North American motorsport fans have long been acquainted with James Hinchcliffe. The fan-favorite IndyCar driver, known as the Mayor of Hinchtown, has been a prominent figure in open-wheel racing for over two decades. However, his recent move into the world of Formula 1 commentary has solidified his place as a rising star in sports broadcasting.

Breaking into the F1 TV World

When James Hinchcliffe announced his retirement from full-time IndyCar racing on December 12, 2021, he was unsure of his next move. However, his passion for commentary had been brewing long before it became a career.

“I always knew it’s what I wanted to do,” Hinchcliffe revealed. “I had a unique opportunity to do some commentary during my time in the Atlantic Series with Champ Car. It was for an international broadcast, so no one in North America heard it, but I got to try it out and loved it.”

Transitioning from Racing to Commentary

As his 2021 IndyCar season unfolded, Hinchcliffe started considering a full-time transition into broadcasting. He approached NBC, which was airing IndyCar at the time, to explore opportunities.

“NBC basically said, ‘The contract is here if you want it,’” Hinchcliffe recalled. With that, a new chapter began.

Preparation and Early Challenges

Despite his enthusiasm, the transition was not seamless. Fellow commentator Townsend Bell informed him that there was little to no formal training.

“I expected some sort of preparation or training program, but Townsend just said, ‘Nope, they just give you a mic and say go!’” Hinchcliffe laughed.

This led to a frantic self-study period where he created driver bios, stats, and research notes. NBC provided some basic guidance, but much of the learning happened on the job.

F1TV Comes Calling

After settling into his IndyCar commentary role, Hinchcliffe received an unexpected message from Ben Edwards, a former A1GP commentator. “He told me F1TV was looking for a North American voice, and I jumped at the chance,” Hinchcliffe said.

Initially, he covered three races for F1TV in 2022. That number increased to six in 2023, and by the end of 2024, he had attended eight Grands Prix.

Adjusting to Formula 1

Moving from IndyCar to F1 commentary was a challenge. “I felt like an imposter at first,” Hinchcliffe admitted. “I expected to be called out more, but the F1TV team was incredibly supportive.”

Unlike his casual F1 fandom before, he now had to meticulously track news, technical details, and team dynamics. He credited colleagues like Jolyon Palmer and Ruth Buscombe-Divey for helping him adapt.

Commentary Philosophy and Reception

Despite the learning curve, Hinchcliffe believes that the fundamentals of racing translate across series. “Whether it’s NASCAR, IMSA, or F1, 95% of what I do is the same. It’s about understanding a driver’s mentality,” he explained.

His presence has been well received, especially by North American audiences. “Some British fans don’t love the accent, but hey, that’s part of it!” he joked.

Looking Ahead

As Hinchcliffe’s broadcasting career evolves, his future remains uncertain. With IndyCar moving from NBC to FOX, and F1TV renewing talent contracts seasonally, his 2025 plans are still up in the air.

“I just want to keep improving and doing this as much as I can,” he said. “The more time I spend here, the better job I can do.”

For now, James Hinchcliffe continues to establish himself as a key voice in motorsport commentary, bridging the gap between American and international racing audiences.
