2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – F1 Qualifying Results (Yas Marina)
McLaren is on the verge of clinching their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998, securing a crucial front-row lockout in qualifying for the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit. With Lando Norris starting from pole and Oscar Piastri alongside him in P2, the team has given themselves a huge advantage in the race for the title.
McLaren Takes Giant Step Toward Constructors’ Title
As the 2024 season draws to a close, McLaren heads into the final race with a 21-point lead over Ferrari, with the Constructors’ Championship now practically within their grasp. Norris and Piastri’s impressive performances in qualifying have given the team a huge boost, with Carlos Sainz, Ferrari’s highest qualifier, starting in P3. This sets up an intense battle for the coveted title on race day.
Struggles for Ferrari and Key Qualifying Drama
Ferrari faced significant difficulties in Abu Dhabi. Charles Leclerc, who was expected to challenge for a strong position, had his lap time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 1. This resulted in him being demoted to P14 in Q2, and with a 10-place grid penalty for a new battery, he will start at the back of the grid in P20. This was a blow to Ferrari’s hopes in the Constructors’ Championship race.
Meanwhile, Haas had a strong showing throughout the weekend, with Nico Hülkenberg initially challenging for pole position in Q3 before ultimately qualifying P4. However, he received a penalty that dropped him three places on the grid, pushing him back to P7.
The drama didn’t stop there, as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, in his final race with the team, failed to make it out of Q1. Hamilton, who started the session with high hopes, suffered a major setback when a bollard hit by Kevin Magnussen got lodged under his W15, leaving him stranded in P18 – the lowest starting position of his Abu Dhabi career. Hamilton admitted, “Yeah, I messed that up big time,” following the incident.
