McLaren’s 2024 F1 season marked by shifting hierarchy between Norris and Piastri

The 2024 Formula 1 season has brought fluctuating dynamics at the McLaren F1 team, where the early-season equality between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri has shifted into a more contentious hierarchy. Piastri, once seen as an equal contender, is now battling inconsistent results and questioning McLaren’s team strategy decisions that increasingly favor Norris.

Norris emerges as McLaren’s number one driver

The year began with both McLaren drivers seemingly on equal footing. However, Norris gradually established himself as McLaren’s leading driver and became Max Verstappen’s closest rival in the F1 championship battle. This prompted the introduction of McLaren’s so-called Papaya Rules—a set of Formula 1 team orders clearly prioritizing Norris’s title bid.

Early implementation of these rules was messy. At the Italian Grand Prix, Piastri attempted an overtake on Norris for the lead, only to allow Charles Leclerc to snatch victory. Following that incident, McLaren tightened their internal regulations, confirming that all strategic calls would now favor Lando Norris.

Oscar Piastri’s mixed results amid McLaren’s F1 drama

Despite the growing tension, Australian rookie Oscar Piastri managed to shine at times. His standout moment came at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Norris started in P15 and Piastri capitalized to claim his second Formula 1 race win, with Norris finishing fourth.

However, such highs have been rare lately. In the last five Grands Prix, Piastri managed just one Formula 1 podium finish, raising questions about whether McLaren’s hierarchical approach is impacting his confidence. The rookie’s performance decline has been a talking point in F1 paddock discussions leading into the season’s final rounds.

Pundits question McLaren’s F1 team strategy

Dutch F1 commentator Olav Mol has been openly critical of McLaren’s inconsistent handling of team orders. Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Mol said:

“Yes, how come all that mess? That’s because of all that whining at McLaren. ‘Yes, we don’t do team orders. Oh, we’re going to do team orders. Oh no, we don’t do team orders anymore.’ This boy is much too young for that. These boys have to learn to win, with everything that comes with it.”

Mol also criticized the Brazil Sprint race decision in which Piastri was told to yield to Norris, suggesting it could damage trust within the team.

Norris’s title hopes fade after Brazil

Despite the McLaren Formula 1 team prioritizing Norris’s title push, the Briton faltered during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend. Mistakes in the Sunday race left him sixth, ending any realistic hope of catching Verstappen in the F1 drivers’ championship. Verstappen secured the title in Las Vegas with a fifth-place finish, leaving Norris to defend second place from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

McLaren’s long-term Formula 1 challenge

What began as a promising campaign has been clouded by McLaren’s internal politics and Formula 1 team strategy missteps. While Norris remains the team’s focal point, sidelining Piastri could have long-term consequences. With pressure from pundits and former drivers like Ralf Schumacher and Eddie Jordan, McLaren faces a crucial decision heading into the 2024 Formula 1 season: continue backing Norris at all costs, or nurture Piastri into a future team leader.

As the F1 season finale approaches, McLaren’s balancing act between short-term ambitions and the development of their rising star may define their future in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship.
