F1 pundit Anthony Davidson shares emotional story about his premonition and experience before his 2012 Le Mans crash that nearly took his life.

Formula 1 pundit Anthony Davidson has opened up about the harrowing moment he knew he was “going to die” just before a horrific crash at the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours race. The crash, which involved a violent collision with a Ferrari, left Davidson airborne before he landed heavily into the barriers, fracturing two of his vertebrae.

Anthony Davidson’s Premonition Before the Le Mans Horror Crash

Davidson, who has since made a full recovery, continues to share his expertise as a Sky Sports pundit during F1 weekends. However, in an emotional interview with F1.com, he revealed that he had a premonition before the race that he might not return home safely.

Reflecting on his feelings leading up to the 2012 Le Mans race, Davidson explained: “I went into Le Mans a little bit trepidatious, and I had this feeling hanging over me all week. I couldn’t put it into context, I couldn’t verbalize it, but I just knew after doing a sport for so many years of my life… I wanted to suppress it and put it to the back of my mind, but it was so odd.”

In a particularly chilling moment before the race, Davidson described how he felt compelled to send his wife a message, saying, "I love you," as if he had an eerie sense that something terrible might happen. “I never do this, but I had left the driver room before the race, then I turned back and tidied everything up. After that, I picked up my phone and sent my wife a message saying, ‘I love you.’ It was almost as if in my head I knew I wasn’t going to come back into that room. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. It’s like I had a premonition – I really did.”

The Le Mans Crash: A Moment of Realization

Davidson recalled the terrifying crash itself, describing how, as his car went airborne, time seemed to slow down, and he came to a grim realization that this could be the end. The impact was violent, and Davidson’s car spun through the air before crashing into the barriers. Despite the severity of the crash, Davidson said he felt strangely calm as the moments unfolded.

“Then it was game face on… I got in the car, I was out there doing my thing, taking risks, driving like a lunatic, as you have to. But when that moment happened, where the driver I was lapping turned in and the cars made contact, as soon as my car went up in the air, the engine died and everything went silent, it was like a dawn of realization, ‘This is the moment!’” he recalled.

“It was the weirdest thing. Basically, it felt like I was going to die… I knew I was going to die. But then I felt completely at ease with it,” Davidson continued. “It’s almost comforting to know that in those moments, something happens to your brain where this calming drug, I don’t know, is pumped out through your body. I’ve heard people, when they’re drowning, say similar things.”

The Aftermath: Full Recovery and Return to Punditry

Remarkably, Davidson made a full recovery from the crash. Despite the severity of his injuries, he returned to motorsport and later became a well-known F1 pundit. His insight and analysis have made him a key part of the Sky Sports F1 team, offering expert commentary during race weekends.

The crash at Le Mans marked a turning point in Davidson’s career. While it was a life-threatening moment, he has gone on to inspire many with his resilience and ability to return to the sport after such a traumatic experience. His story continues to resonate with motorsport fans, offering a powerful reminder of the dangers drivers face every time they step into a race car.
