GP Qualifying: Verstappen beats Leclerc and Russell to pole for season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix
SAKHIR, Bahrain -- Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the 2024 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix with a time of 1m 29.179s, outpacing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' George Russell. Verstappen's final lap was two-tenths quicker than Leclerc and an additional tenth faster than Russell.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso finished sixth, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Lewis Hamilton ended up ninth for Mercedes, while Haas' Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top ten.
AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda narrowly missed Q3, placing 11th, with Lance Stroll of Aston Martin and Alex Albon of Williams following. Daniel Ricciardo finished 14th for AlphaTauri, ahead of Haas' Kevin Magnussen who struggled with track limits.
Sauber drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu were 16th and 17th, and Williams' Logan Sargeant faced traffic issues, finishing 18th. Alpine had a tough session with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly at the back, prompting an encouraging radio message from Ocon.
