Pierre Gasly Signs Alpine F1 Contract Extension Through 2028

Pierre Gasly has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Alpine through the 2028 Formula 1 season, the team announced ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the venue where Gasly famously scored his 2021 victory with AlphaTauri. In a major F1 contract extension that signals Alpine’s long-term plan, the French driver remains central to the team’s rebuild.

Gasly’s New Alpine Deal

Gasly originally joined Alpine in 2023 on a deal running through the end of 2026, coinciding with F1’s sweeping new regulations on aerodynamics and power units set to debut that year. The new agreement extends well beyond that reset and underscores Alpine’s intention to build around the Frenchman, positioning him for the 2026 Formula 1 regulations overhaul and beyond.

The team said his deal “cements Alpine's belief in Pierre as the driver to lead the team into the new regulation era in 2026 and beyond.” Alpine has also made clear it sees Gasly as its “lead driver” heading into that cycle, highlighting his role in the team’s Formula 1 future and long-term performance goals.

Alpine’s Future with Mercedes Power

Alpine, currently rooted to the bottom of the constructors’ standings, will switch to Mercedes power units next season and remains optimistic about climbing back into contention under the upcoming rules. The team added in its announcement: “Pierre's performance on track and growing status in the Formula One Paddock has constantly evolved showing speed, consistency, and leadership”. The move to become a Mercedes-powered customer team is viewed internally as a key step in Alpine’s F1 competitiveness strategy.

Gasly on His Long-Term Commitment

Gasly emphasized the significance of the team’s leadership and the project’s long-term horizon as reasons for staying put. “I'm thrilled to commit my long-term future to Alpine. As a Frenchman, especially, driving for a French car company, makes me feel very proud. Since I joined in 2023, I have always felt that this team is the right place to be for the future,” he said. “Flavio's support and belief in me, François' commitment to the Formula One project, as well as the people we have in Enstone made this a natural decision and I want to be here in years to come and deliver on our joint objective: to win races and world championships. We're all in this together and I look forward to continuing this special story.” The comments reinforce Alpine’s F1 project as a long-term platform for success.

Flavio Briatore on Gasly’s Role

Alpine executive director Flavio Briatore said Gasly is the cornerstone of the team’s rebuild. “Since I returned to the team, I have always stated how important it is to build and grow the competitiveness of BWT Alpine Formula One Team. We're well prepared for the new era of Formula One, beginning in 2026, and now we have our lead driver confirmed to bring us well into the future. “Pierre has been an immense asset for the team during this challenging period. I have been very impressed with his attitude, dedication and talent and we look forward to continuing this project together for a long time.” Briatore’s stance underscores Alpine’s strategy for the 2026 F1 rules reset and its driver-leadership model.

Alpine Driver Lineup Outlook

The identity of Gasly’s teammate remains undecided for next season. Williams loanee Franco Colapinto, who replaced Jack Doohan at Imola earlier this year, is under consideration but not yet assured of a seat. Alpine also has Paul Aron in its junior ranks. Out of its current pool, Doohan is considered the least likely to step up in 2026 after a difficult short stint, though Briatore has acknowledged mismanaging the Australian’s time on the grid. The evolving Alpine F1 driver lineup remains a key storyline in the driver market.

Gasly as Alpine’s Long-Term Anchor

Gasly, widely regarded as one of the strongest drivers in the midfield and a potential title contender in the right machinery, now serves as Alpine’s long-term anchor as the team targets a reset with new regulations and a new engine partnership. For fans searching for the latest Formula 1 news on contract extensions, 2026 F1 regulations, and Alpine’s switch to Mercedes power units, Gasly’s commitment marks a pivotal moment in the team’s bid to return to competitiveness.
