Max Verstappen Dismisses 2026 Speculation: ‘It Was Always Very Simple’
Max Verstappen Clarifies Formula 1 Future, Staying Committed to Red Bull Racing
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands — Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula 1 world champion, has cleared the air surrounding months of speculation about his 2026 race seat. Speaking ahead of the F1 summer break, Verstappen reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull Racing, shutting down rumors of a high-profile move to Mercedes.
Speculation reached a fever pitch after reports highlighted an exit clause in Verstappen’s contract. Many wondered whether Verstappen would trigger the clause, opening the door for a potential shift to Mercedes—a possibility team principal Toto Wolff had publicly entertained. However, Verstappen ultimately declined to exercise the option, citing his straightforward decision-making process.
“For me, it was very, very simple anyway,” Verstappen told ESPN in an exclusive interview addressing the speculation. “I only say what I want to say. And I was never even stressed about it at all because... naturally, you always want to win. But at the same time, you just work on performance.
“People always come up with stories or ask questions. But for me, it was quite straightforward all the time,” added Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until 2028.
Verstappen’s Calm Mindset
The Dutch driver’s composure has been a hallmark of his career—and this situation was no different. Speaking on how he handles outside distractions and career decisions, Verstappen revealed his focus remains unwavering.
“I think in general, I’m a person that is always quite relaxed about it," Verstappen said. "I don’t stress out or go to bed massively overthinking stuff. I just live my life, you know, see what happens next. For me, there’s nothing wrong with talking or listening [to offers] or whatever, but it was all under control.”
The Mercedes Connection
Much of the speculation about Verstappen’s future revolved around Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who had expressed serious interest in recruiting the four-time champion. Reports even suggested George Russell’s contract extension conversations were paused as Mercedes entertained the possibility of bringing Verstappen onboard.
During the summer break, social media lit up when photos surfaced of Wolff and Verstappen spending time on the same yacht in Sardinia, sparking intrigue among fans. Regardless of what rumors suggested, Verstappen dismissed any notion of business agendas behind his interactions with Wolff.
“There’s no secret,” Verstappen said of his time with the Mercedes team principal. “I mean, I even went for lunch with Toto and the family, and I think that’s absolutely allowed. It’s not even that you speak about Formula 1 business—it’s just life. We parked up next to each other because we were in the same bay to sleep, and during the day, everyone does their thing. But sometimes you meet up, and you have a good relationship with people. I think that’s nice, that it’s not only about competition.”
Future Directions for Red Bull and Mercedes
Ultimately, Verstappen’s decision to stay with Red Bull Racing aligns with his long-term goals. He will remain with the team until at least 2028, continuing to chase records and championship glory. Mercedes, on the other hand, appears poised to stick with its current driver lineup moving forward. George Russell is expected to continue alongside rising talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 season.
For Verstappen, the choice was clear from the start: Red Bull remains the stable foundation for his championship aspirations. As he said, “The future was never up for debate.”
