Steve Nielsen Appointed Managing Director of Alpine F1 Team
In a key restructuring move, Renault-owned Alpine has announced the appointment of Steve Nielsen as the managing director of its Formula 1 team. Nielsen will officially assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Enstone-based outfit starting September 1. The decision follows the departure of team principal Oliver Oakes earlier this year.
A Return of Experience
Nielsen's appointment marks the return of an experienced figure to the team. The Briton most recently worked for Liberty Media-owned Formula 1 and briefly served as the sporting director for the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). Notably, Nielsen held the role of sporting director for Renault during the team’s successful campaigns in 2005 and 2006, when they clinched back-to-back Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships under the leadership of Flavio Briatore.
Briatore, who continues to serve as Alpine’s executive adviser and oversee operations, will maintain his involvement as the team navigates its latest leadership transition.
Alpine’s Challenges and New Direction
Alpine, which currently finds itself at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship standings, is looking to turn the tide with these leadership changes. The team is set to switch to Mercedes engines next season, a development that many hope will position them for a more competitive future.
Aerodynamic Reinforcements
In addition to Nielsen’s appointment, Alpine has named Kris Midgley as the new head of aerodynamic development. Midgley, a veteran in the field, is returning to Enstone after a stint from 2007 to 2013. He rejoins the team following his tenure as Ferrari’s principal aerodynamicist, where he contributed to the Scuderia’s aerodynamic ambitions.
Leadership Turnover
This marks yet another chapter in a turbulent four seasons for a team that has already seen five different leaders in the principal role. Oakes, who resigned in May citing personal reasons, had only been in charge since July 2022.
Building for Long-Term Success
With Nielsen at the helm, Alpine hopes to foster stability and build a platform for long-term success.
