George Russell confident in long-term Mercedes future despite Verstappen speculation
George Russell Confident in Mercedes Future Amid Verstappen Speculation
Silverstone, England – George Russell insists the odds of him leaving Mercedes in 2026 are "exceptionally low," despite speculation stemming from team principal Toto Wolff's reported interest in Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen.
Russell, who rose through the ranks of Mercedes' junior program and is managed by the team, faces the expiration of his current contract with the German manufacturer at the end of the season. Questions over his future have only intensified in recent weeks, with rumors swirling that Mercedes is exploring a move for Verstappen, a four-time world champion.
Russell Reaffirms Mercedes Loyalty
Speaking to the press on Thursday at the British Grand Prix, Russell addressed the speculation head-on, reaffirming his belief that he remains integral to Mercedes' plans moving forward.
"I've been focused on my side; I am loyal to Mercedes," Russell said. "So, at the end of the day, everything will work itself out. And the likelihood I'm not at Mercedes next year, I think, is exceptionally low."
When asked about ongoing contract discussions, Russell played down notions of urgency, noting that while there is no formal deadline, he anticipates an agreement being finalized before Formula 1's annual summer break in August.
"There's not really any deadline in place, to be honest," Russell explained. "Naturally, you try and have stuff done before the summer break. From my side, Mercedes manage me as well. So it's not really a deadline in my hands.
"I'm not even thinking about it right now. Obviously, there's a lot of questions about it. But the more we speak, the less we speak about it – nothing really changes. It'll happen when the time is right. I expect probably in the next couple of weeks something to happen, but we'll need to wait and see."
Verstappen and Antonelli: Mercedes’ Future Options?
The rumors surrounding Verstappen’s potential arrival at Mercedes have raised questions about how the team would manage its lineup. With an 18-year-old phenom in Andrea Kimi Antonelli—a product of Mercedes’ junior program—waiting in the wings, many have speculated that Russell could be the odd man out if Verstappen were to join.
For his part, Russell said he has no concerns about the speculation. Even addressing past tensions with Verstappen, which included him calling the Dutchman a "bully" at one stage, Russell maintained that he is comfortable with whatever decision the team makes.
"I mean, every team has two seats available, and it's normal that every team is considering what the future holds," Russell said. "I don't take that personally because I made it clear from the beginning I'm happy to be teammates with anybody.
"Of course there are conversations and rumors, it's been pointed towards me, but from my side, that isn't going to be the case. I want to continue with Mercedes into the future. The fact is, Toto has never let me down, has always given me his word, and he's also got to do what's right for his team, which includes me and the thousands of people who work for Mercedes."
Russell: "I’ll Just Focus on the Driving"
While Russell was measured in dismissing the uncertainties, he emphasized his trust in Toto Wolff and Mercedes to make the best decision for the team. The young Briton made it clear that he doesn’t foresee himself driving anywhere else in the near future.
"For me, it's nothing to worry about, as I don't think I'll be going anywhere," he said. "And whoever my teammate is doesn't concern me either, so I'll just focus on the driving."
As speculation continues to swirl around Mercedes’ potential moves, Russell’s composure and loyalty to the team underline his confidence in remaining a cornerstone of their long-term success.
For now, the focus will shift back to the track, as Russell gears up to compete in front of his home crowd at Silverstone for this weekend's British Grand Prix.
