Arvid Lindblad granted F1 superlicence ahead of 18th birthday following Red Bull request
Red Bull Junior Driver Arvid Lindblad Secures Formula 1 Superlicence at 17
Red Bull junior driver Arvid Lindblad has been awarded a Formula 1 superlicence at the age of 17, following a special exemption granted by the FIA after a formal request from the team. The decision paves the way for the talented British driver to take part in key F1 activities before his official 18th birthday on August 8, the minimum age typically required to hold the coveted licence.
Lindblad’s Rapid Ascent in Junior Formula Racing
Lindblad's rapid rise through the ranks of junior formula racing has earned him significant recognition, as he already possesses the necessary superlicence points due to his consistent success. The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council reviewed the request during their meeting in Macau and deemed Lindblad's accomplishments and maturity sufficient for an early superlicence approval.
"After considering the information presented in support of this request, the World Council found that the driver has recently and consistently demonstrated outstanding ability and maturity in single-seater formula car competition and therefore approved the request," read the official FIA statement.
Success in Formula 2
Currently sitting third in the Formula 2 championship standings, Lindblad took his maiden feature race victory of the season in Spain last weekend. His performances have further solidified his reputation as a rising star in Red Bull's esteemed junior driver program.
Set to Participate in F1 Free Practice Sessions
Lindblad is set to participate in free practice sessions for Red Bull ahead of the August break and has also qualified as a reserve driver for both Red Bull Racing and its junior team, Racing Bulls. His readiness as a reserve could become crucial for Red Bull, as reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen is just one penalty point away from facing a superlicence suspension for one race.
Red Bull's Long-Term Planning
Interestingly, Lindblad’s superlicence approval predates Verstappen’s recent three penalty points from the Spanish Grand Prix, showcasing Red Bull’s long-term planning. Should Verstappen be sidelined, Lindblad provides a strong alternative option to Ayumu Iwasa, the current reserve driver who is actively competing in Japan’s Super Formula.
Designs for the Future
Red Bull’s management considers Lindblad a future star, with plans to potentially place him in a full-time F1 seat with Racing Bulls as early as 2026. The team currently fields four drivers across its two Formula 1 teams: Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull Racing, and Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls.
A Teenage Sensation on the Rise
With Lindblad continuing to impress in the feeder series, his early superlicence approval underscores Red Bull's confidence in his talent and readiness to deliver at the highest level of motorsport. F1 fans will undoubtedly be watching closely as this teenage sensation begins his journey into the sport’s elite ranks.
