George Russell calls out Max Verstappen after controversial collision at Spanish Grand Prix
George Russell and Max Verstappen Clash at Spanish Grand Prix
BARCELONA, Spain — Tensions flared at the Spanish Grand Prix as George Russell accused Max Verstappen of deliberate contact during the closing moments of the race, sparking one of the most heated post-race exchanges of the 2023 Formula 1 season.
The drama unfolded when Verstappen appeared to drive into the side of Russell’s Mercedes after being instructed to let him back through following an earlier on-track incident. While opinions on the intent behind Verstappen’s actions varied, Russell was unequivocal in his stance.
“It felt very deliberate, to be honest,” Russell stated after the race. "It’s something that I’ve seen numerous times in sim racing and on iRacing. Never have I seen it in a Formula 1 race. So that was something new.
“It’s a bit of a shame because Max is clearly one of the best drivers in the world. But maneuvers like that are just totally unnecessary and sort of lets him down. It’s a shame for all the young kids looking up, aspiring to be Formula 1 drivers.
“So, as I said, I don’t know what he was thinking. In the end, I’m not going to lose sleep over it because I ultimately benefited from those antics.”
When asked if Verstappen’s move warranted disqualification, Russell left the decision to the stewards but didn’t mince words about the seriousness of the situation.
“Honestly, I need to look back on it. If it was truly deliberate, then absolutely [disqualification was deserved]. Because you cannot deliberately crash into another driver,” Russell added. “We’re putting our lives on the line. We’re fortunate the cars are as safe as they are these days, but we shouldn’t take it for granted.”
Verstappen, however, brushed aside the criticism, responding to Russell’s comments with a cutting remark:
“I’ll bring some tissues next time.”
Penalties and Super License Concerns
The stewards handed Verstappen a penalty and docked him three points on his super license, pushing him dangerously close to a race ban. Verstappen now sits at 11 points—just one point shy of the 12-point threshold that triggers an automatic race suspension.
The timing could further complicate the Dutchman’s season, with two of those points set to expire on June 30. Until then, Verstappen must tread carefully in the upcoming races in Canada and Austria to avoid a costly suspension.
2016 world champion Nico Rosberg didn’t hold back in the post-race analysis, calling for Verstappen to be black-flagged and disqualified.
"It looked like intentional retaliation to me," Rosberg remarked on Sky Sports.
His comments gained traction as footage of the incident made its rounds, with even Verstappen’s fellow drivers showing disbelief in the cool-down room.
Charles Leclerc watched the replay and muttered, “Oh my God.”
Oscar Piastri chimed in with a blunt, “Yikes.”
Lando Norris added a touch of humor, saying, “I’ve done that before … in Mario Kart.”
Verstappen’s Response
Unapologetic as ever, Verstappen downplayed the incident when questioned, choosing instead to focus on his team’s struggles throughout the race.
“Does it matter [if contact with George was intentional]?" Verstappen said to Sky Sports. "I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment.
“We are way too slow anyway to fight for the title; I think that was clear again today. We tried to do a three-stop… I thought it was quite good and racy, but we had quite a bit of degradation on the tires. Unfortunately, the safety car came out at the end, and we ran out of tires with the hard compound clearly not being the right choice.”
Beyond the controversy, the Spanish Grand Prix highlighted Verstappen’s ongoing struggles with Red Bull's car setup and strategy woes this season. However, all eyes will remain on Verstappen’s behavior in the upcoming races, with the Dutchman now walking a tightrope between aggression and precaution as he tries to avoid the devastating cost of a race ban.
The Rivalry Continues
For Russell, the focus now shifts to building on his strong performance, but the bad blood with Verstappen is unlikely to cool anytime soon. Formula 1 fans are bound to keep watching as this fiery rivalry unfolds.
