Oscar Piastri secures pole for Emilia-Romagna GP in thrilling qualifying session
Oscar Piastri Secures Pole Position for Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix
Oscar Piastri claimed pole position for Sunday’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, narrowly edging out reigning champion Max Verstappen in a gripping qualifying session at Imola. The McLaren driver, who leads the championship standings, beat Verstappen’s Red Bull by just 0.034 seconds, with the two trading sector times across the historic 3-mile circuit.
“It was a great session but a very tough session with all the delays, red flags and the tires,” said Piastri, who notched his third pole position of the season. “The tire has been very tricky today. I think after yesterday everyone thought the C6 was not too bad and today it was a real mystery. The team did a great job and got the car in a nice window. We’ve been trying a few different things this weekend, and it came together for qualifying. The lap was good. I had about four cars in the last corner, which didn’t help, but it was enough, so I’m very happy with the job we’ve done and excited for [Sunday] now.”
Last-Lap Drama Sets the Tone for Race Day
In the closing moments of qualifying, Verstappen appeared poised to snatch pole on his final lap as he exited the last corner marginally ahead of Piastri’s time. But it was the McLaren that had the edge on the drag to the finish line, setting up what promises to be an intense battle in Sunday’s race.
George Russell delivered an impressive performance to take third on the grid for Mercedes, narrowly beating Lando Norris, Piastri’s McLaren teammate and current runner-up in the championship standings. Norris, who sits 16 points behind Piastri, will start fourth.
The fight at the front will rekindle memories of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix earlier this season, where Piastri, starting second, managed to beat Verstappen into Turn 1 for an early lead.
Strong Qualifying for Alonso and Williams
Fernando Alonso secured a season-best fifth place in a heavily upgraded Aston Martin, marking a major step forward for the British outfit. The team had struggled earlier in the year but unveiled a substantial upgrade package this weekend, which appears to have delivered immediate results.
“It’s been a long journey, but this is where we want to be competing,” Alonso said after qualifying.
Williams also impressed, with Carlos Sainz and teammate Alex Albon locking out sixth and seventh on the grid, respectively. Lance Stroll followed in eighth, behind the wheel of the second Aston Martin.
Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar continued to impress, qualifying ninth in his debut season. Meanwhile, Pierre Gasly rounded out the top 10 for Alpine.
Disappointments for Ferrari at Home
It was another disappointing outing for Ferrari on home soil, with both cars eliminated in Q2. Charles Leclerc narrowly missed out on the top-10 shootout, ending up 11th, just 0.083 seconds shy. His teammate Lewis Hamilton qualified 12th.
“My god, my god, my god,” exclaimed Leclerc over the team radio after learning how close he had been.
Adding to the disappointment for local fans was Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the sole Italian driver on the grid. In his first home race, Antonelli managed only 13th in qualifying.
Red Flags and Dramatic Crashes
The session was marred by several red flags and dramatic accidents. Franco Colapinto’s debut qualifying session as a full-time Alpine driver ended in the barriers during Q1 after a high-speed crash at Imola’s iconic Tamburello Chicane. Colapinto, who replaced Jack Doohan ahead of this weekend, managed to progress to Q2 despite the crash, as his earlier time held. However, a procedural penalty dropped him to 16th on the grid.
Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda suffered a frightening crash at the Villeneuve Chicane. The Red Bull driver took too much curb at the first apex and lost control at around 120 mph, resulting in a barrel roll after his car impacted the barriers. Fortunately, Tsunoda emerged unscathed and was taken to the medical center for mandatory checks. With no time set, he will start last on the grid.
