Former F1 and Le Mans champion Jochen Mass passes away at 78
Motorsport Legend Jochen Mass Passes Away at Age 78
Jochen Mass, a celebrated figure in the world of motorsport, has passed away at the age of 78. The former Formula 1 driver and Le Mans winner succumbed to complications following a stroke he suffered earlier this year, his family confirmed via Instagram on Sunday.
A Decorated Motorsport Career
Mass leaves behind a decorated career that spanned decades and included some of the most remarkable and poignant moments in motorsport history. The German driver claimed his sole Formula 1 victory at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, held at Barcelona's Montjuïc circuit. The race was marred by tragedy, as Rolf Stommelen's Lola veered off track, resulting in the death of four spectators. Despite the shortened race and the half points awarded, the event became significant for another reason: it marked the only instance in which a female driver finished in the points. Italian racer Lella Lombardi claimed sixth place and earned half a championship point, a milestone yet unmatched by any other woman in Formula 1.
A Career Marked by Controversy and Tragedy
Perhaps the most controversial moment of Mass's Formula 1 career came in 1982 during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve tragically lost his life in a high-speed collision with Mass's March. While the incident cast a shadow over his career, Jacques Villeneuve, Gilles' son and the 1997 Formula 1 World Champion, publicly absolved Mass. "Our family never blamed you—it was a racing incident," Jacques assured him in later years.
Tributes to Jochen Mass
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali paid tribute to Mass, remembering him fondly. "I am deeply saddened to hear the news that my friend Jochen Mass has passed away," Domenicali said. "He had an incredible life at the heart of our sport and was a wonderful person who embraced life and loved Formula 1."
Mass competed in 114 Formula 1 Grands Prix before retiring from the sport later in 1982. However, his racing career extended beyond Formula 1. In 1989, he rose to the top of endurance racing, clinching victory in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans while driving for the Sauber-Mercedes team.
Life Beyond Racing
Following his retirement from racing, Mass transitioned into broadcasting, where he continued to share his passion and expertise with fans around the globe.
End of an Era
Jochen Mass’s passing marks the end of an era for motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. His talent on the track and his character off it will long be remembered.
