Carlos Sainz backs Madrid’s Madring Circuit as potential ‘best in the world’
Carlos Sainz Backs Madrid’s Madring Circuit as Potential Best Track on F1 Calendar
Madrid’s highly anticipated Madring Formula 1 circuit, set to make its debut next season, could establish itself as the premier track on the F1 calendar, according to homegrown star Carlos Sainz.
In a press conference on Friday, the Madrid-born Williams driver expressed his excitement about the newly planned 5.47-kilometer circuit, which will feature 22 turns and a mix of tight street sections and more open, high-speed corners. Sainz, serving as an ambassador for the project, didn’t hold back in his praise.
“I think we can be the best circuit in the world and the best event of the whole calendar,” Sainz declared with confidence. “There will be 24 or 25 races, and I honestly think along with Mexico, Miami, Las Vegas that do it very well, but sincerely I trust a lot in Madrid and I believe that Madrid can do better.”
Construction Plans and Project Details
Plans for the state-of-the-art circuit are well underway. Local authorities confirmed on Friday that all necessary licenses and permits have been secured, allowing construction to begin immediately.
The design and construction of the Madring circuit will be spearheaded by Spanish engineering firm Acciona and French firm Eiffage. Located in Madrid’s northeast, near the IFEMA exhibition center, the project carries a hefty price tag of €83.2 million ($94.57 million) and is scheduled for completion by May 2026.
Impact on Spanish Grand Prix Venues
The inclusion of the Madring on next season’s calendar marks the beginning of a transitional period for Formula 1 in Spain. While the new circuit is poised to replace the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Barcelona retains its place on next year’s schedule as it enters the final year of its F1 contract.
Located approximately 32 kilometers from the eastern coastal city, the Circuit de Catalunya has long been the home of the Spanish Grand Prix. However, logistical challenges, including its 45-minute walk from the nearest station, have prompted a shift in focus towards the capital.
Madrid’s Ambition to Redefine F1 Events
As Spain prepares for the rare scenario of hosting two Formula 1 races in a single season, anticipation continues to mount for what Madrid hopes will become one of the sport’s crown jewels. With Carlos Sainz’s unwavering support and ambitious plans in motion, the Madring circuit is positioned to make a significant impact on the global F1 stage.
Fans and drivers alike will now eagerly wait to see if Madrid can live up to Sainz’s lofty expectations and reimagine what a world-class circuit and event can be.
