Thailand is exploring the possibility of hosting a Formula 1 street race in Bangkok by 2028 following discussions between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and F1 chief Stefano Domenicali. The Thai government plans to conduct a feasibility study to evaluate this ambitious project.

Focus Shifts from Buriram to Bangkok

Although Thailand already has the FIA-accredited Chang International Circuit in Buriram, the proposal focuses on a new urban circuit in the bustling capital. "We had the opportunity to discuss the opportunity of Thailand to host the Formula 1 race, which is a great sport with a worldwide following," said the Prime Minister on X, after meeting with Domenicali.

Benefits of Hosting a Formula 1 Race

The potential race is seen as a catalyst for upgrading Bangkok's infrastructure and drawing high-end tourists. Paetongtarn emphasized the broader benefits, stating, "All Thai people will benefit from organizing this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, and importing new technologies and innovations."

Positive Reception from F1 Leadership

Domenicali also shared his enthusiasm on X, describing the plans as "impressive," and expressed eagerness to continue the discussions. Should these plans come to fruition, Bangkok would join the ranks of cities like Singapore in hosting an F1 street race, expanding the sport's presence in Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s Cultural Ties to F1

Historically, F1 has seen two Thai drivers: Alex Albon, who races under the Thai flag, and Prince Birabongse Bhanudej, adding cultural significance to the nation's F1 aspirations.
