Red Bull considering Tsunoda to replace Lawson for Japanese GP

Red Bull is reportedly contemplating replacing Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda for the Japanese GP after only two races. Lawson's stint has been less than impressive, including a DNF in Australia and a 12th-place finish in China. He has also failed to advance beyond Q1 in three qualifying attempts.

Originally, Lawson replaced Sergio Pérez after 11 races with Racing Bulls. Despite his experience, Tsunoda, entering his fifth year with the second team, was initially overlooked but now seems poised for promotion.

Speculation peaked during the Chinese GP weekend when Lawson admitted he needed more time to adapt. Lawson clarified, "I don't have time to test the car and get used to it... each race, we're losing points. But I'm also not stupid, and I know that obviously I'm here to perform."

Red Bull boss Christian Horner is prioritizing the potential switch this week. "Look, I think everything is purely speculative at the moment," Horner stated post-race in Shanghai. He acknowledged Lawson's potential but noted his struggles: "The pressure just naturally grows in this business. And I feel very sorry for him."

Despite pressure to confirm Lawson's seat for Japan, Horner maintained, "I think we take away the information we have."

Reports also suggest Argentinian driver Franco Colapinto might join Red Bull's junior team, potentially replacing Lawson altogether. However, sources indicate Colapinto is more likely to replace Jack Doohan at Alpine before the European leg of the season.
