Piastri praises Chinese GP victory as redemption after Australia
Oscar Piastri celebrated his first win of the season at the Chinese Grand Prix, noting it was "what I feel like I deserved from last week," referencing his disappointing ninth-place finish in Australia. Piastri's victory came from an impressive drive, leading from pole position and securing a 1-2 finish for McLaren alongside teammate Lando Norris.
Reflecting on his triumph, Piastri said, “It’s been an incredible weekend from start to finish. The car’s been pretty mega the whole time. This is what I feel like I deserved from last week, so [I’m] extremely happy. The team did a mega job – 1-2 obviously.”
The focus of the race was on strategy, with teams debating between one or two stops. Piastri commented on the tire management, “The hard was a much better tire than everyone expected, or certainly than we expected. To go all the way to the end like that was a bit of a surprise, but a happy surprise. Very proud of the race we managed to pull off.”
Piastri also took a moment to thank the fans at the Shanghai International Circuit, humorously acknowledging his 1/16th Chinese heritage: “Thanks for the support, the crowd’s been exceptional this week.”
The victory propels Piastri to fourth in the Drivers’ Championship with 34 points, while Norris leads with 44. McLaren now enjoys a 25-point lead over Mercedes in the Teams' standings.
