Australian GP: Antonelli Impresses with fourth-place finish on Mercedes debut
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was promoted back to fourth place in the Australian Grand Prix standings after a previously imposed penalty was successfully overturned by the stewards.
In an impressive display at the Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes' young talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured fourth place in his Formula 1 debut, further solidifying his promising future in the sport. Starting 16th on the grid, the 18-year-old overcame an initially imposed five-second penalty for an unsafe pit lane release. The penalty was later overturned on appeal, allowing Antonelli to secure his position just behind teammate George Russell on the podium.
The race, marked by challenging and unpredictable weather conditions, saw six rookies compete, with only Antonelli and Oliver Bearman of Haas finishing the race. An early race incident with Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar delayed the start, highlighting the treacherous conditions with a heavy crash into the wall during the formation lap.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff expressed his admiration for Antonelli's composure and skill throughout the race. "He took it the right way, wheeled it in one by one, showed the pace when he had no traffic and eventually ended up P4 on the road, and that's impressive," said Wolff. "Even very good drivers spun or hit the wall, and it was easier to not finish than finish and he kept his cool. It was very impressive to see, and it shows he has a good future as long as the trajectory keeps being where it is."
Antonelli himself was pleased with his performance, reflecting on the difficult race conditions. "We got the worst possible conditions for a first race. I mean, we got wet, slicks on damp, slicks on wet, and then back to wet. So definitely a really, really eventful race. But really happy how it was managed from my side and from the team. I definitely cannot complain about today."
Teammate George Russell managed to secure his first podium of the season, navigating the tricky conditions efficiently. "It was a race of survival really," said Russell. "To come home in P3 was a good result and an amazing job by Kimi as well to bring the car home in fourth, a great effort."
Wolff was equally complimentary towards Russell, emphasizing his skill and leadership within the team. "There's so much talk about Kimi and he merits it, but George is so good," Wolff said. "He extracts from the car more than the car has at times. He makes no mistakes. He's a true leader in the team, and we're lucky to have him."
The duo's strong performance at the Australian GP sets a promising tone for Mercedes as they look forward to upcoming races.
