Oscar Piastri secures long-term future with McLaren

Oscar Piastri has solidified his commitment to McLaren, signing a multiyear contract extension that extends beyond 2026. The Australian driver joined McLaren in 2023 after a legal dispute with Alpine, which had signed Piastri to its driver academy in 2020 with hopes of promoting him to F1.
In his first season with McLaren, Piastri extended his contract through 2026 and has now agreed to continue beyond that date. Recognized as one of racing's most promising young talents, the 23-year-old clinched his first F1 victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix last July and followed it up with a win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix two months later.
"It's a great feeling knowing that I'm part of McLaren's long-term vision," Piastri stated. "The team had the belief in me when we signed in 2022, and the journey we've gone on over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the very top of the sport has been incredible."
McLaren has seen a resurgence in recent seasons, winning the constructors' championship last year for the first time in 26 years. Piastri's teammate, Lando Norris, also committed to the team with a multiyear deal beyond 2026, signed at the start of 2024.
"It's fantastic to confirm Oscar's extension with McLaren," said McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. "We've got the best driver lineup on the grid, and in the past two seasons, we've seen how much of an asset to the team Oscar is both on and off track."
Team principal Andrea Stella emphasized the significance of Piastri’s extension: "Further extending our partnership with Oscar is a symbol of our belief and trust in him as a driver, as well as a reflection of our shared ambition to continue in our fight for championships together."
The new F1 season kicks off at Piastri's home race in Melbourne on Sunday, with McLaren entering as the favourite to retain its constructors' title. Both Piastri and Norris are eager to compete for the drivers' championship, and the team's leadership is confident in their prospects.
