Formula 1 and the FIA have granted approval for Cadillac's entry into the 2026 Formula 1 season, expanding the grid to 11 teams starting next year. This landmark decision confirms Cadillac's partnership with Ferrari for engine supplies in the short term. However, General Motors, Cadillac's parent company, has already committed to developing its own engines by the end of the decade from a U.S.-based headquarters.

FIA, Formula 1 approve Cadillac entry for 2026 season

Cadillac has established an F1 facility near Silverstone to serve its race team operations. Additionally, plans are underway to build an engine facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite the initial hesitation from F1 regarding Cadillac's bid under the Andretti name, the firm establishment of these facilities played a crucial role in securing final approval.

The introduction of Cadillac into Formula 1 represents a significant achievement, following closely on the heels of Audi's takeover of the Sauber team next season. While Cadillac has not announced its driver lineup yet, there is speculation about potential candidates.

Notably, Michael Andretti, who was instrumental in the initial bid, has previously expressed interest in having at least one American driver on the team. Colton Herta, considered the most viable candidate, has shown reluctance towards a switch to F1 when asked at the IndyCar season opener. In addition, Sergio Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo, both recently released from the Red Bull program, are prominent free agents currently available.

Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, who had advocated for an investigation into the initial exclusion of the Andretti bid, released a celebratory statement following the confirmation. "Last year, we took a stand when F1 sought to exclude General Motors/Cadillac from the F1 championship series despite meeting all technical and financial requirements to field a team. I am glad that F1 has reversed course and finally allowed an all-American team to compete," she stated. "This is a win for competition, American manufacturing, and F1 fans."

As Cadillac officially joins the F1 grid, the excitement and anticipation for the upcoming 2026 season continue to build, promising a new chapter for both the team and American motorsport enthusiasts.
