Alpine rookie Doohan unfazed by Colapinto rumors

Alpine rookie Jack Doohan remains unconcerned amidst swirling rumors suggesting that Franco Colapinto might replace him during the current F1 season.

The Australian driver's future in Formula 1 has become increasingly uncertain following the arrival of the Argentine racer. Colapinto joined Alpine as a reserve driver on loan from Williams, sparking speculation of a potential swap as early as the Miami Grand Prix in May.

Colapinto garnered immediate attention in 2024 when he took over Logan Sargeant's seat at Williams, prompting widespread discussion about his future in the sport.

When asked if he was worried about being replaced this year, Doohan candidly replied, "No. I've been told he's [the] reserve driver."

Speaking at the F1 2025 launch event, Doohan highlighted that pressure and uncertainty are inherent aspects of being a Formula 1 driver.

"I think regardless, you're one of 20 Formula 1 drivers in the world," Doohan remarked. "I know when I was a go-karter, Formula 3, Formula 2, I would have done anything to be in Formula 1, and sacrifice everything. I don't think necessarily someone inside the team, outside the team, anyone who is performing well, you're always going to have pressure on your shoulders because you're in such a cutthroat sport. Whatever pressure there may be, I look forward to enjoying that, embracing it, and just enjoying my Formula 1 season."

In a related development, Alpine announced the signing of Argentine sponsor Mercado Libre shortly after Doohan's news conference. Notably, Mercado Libre also joined Williams following Colapinto's debut at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix.

When questioned whether Colapinto's presence undermined his position in the team, Doohan responded, "I was a 21-year-old reserve driver last year, with a long-term contract. But no, I don't. Maybe I should, I don't know. I don't really understand that as a question. But yeah, definitely not."

Williams have confirmed that Colapinto's stint at Alpine is essentially a loan, with plans for his return to Williams in the future. This arrangement adds another layer of complexity to the speculation about potential driver changes within Alpine.

As the F1 season progresses, all eyes will be on Doohan and Colapinto to see how the dynamics within the Alpine team develop.
