Max Verstappen collects fourth F1 championship trophy at historic Kigali gala

At 27, Verstappen joins an elite group of just six drivers who have won four or more titles since the inception of the championship in 1950. Reflecting on his achievement and the season, Verstappen expressed immense pride in his team's effort and success.

Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen has cemented his status as one of Formula 1's elite, collecting the championship trophy for the fourth consecutive year at an unprecedented awards ceremony in Africa. The event took place in Kigali, Rwanda, marking the first time the ceremony has been hosted on the continent.

The trophy presentation was led by International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, accompanied by Rwandan President Paul Kagame. President Kagame, who addressed the audience, hinted at Rwanda's ambition to host a Formula 1 race in the future.

"It's amazing, four titles is definitely incredible. Of course, I also hope it doesn't stop here. I hope we can be successful for a longer period of time," Verstappen said. "This year the competition is very close, but then again in 2026 a lot is going to change."

In a notable shift, McLaren clinched the constructors' title, ending Red Bull's dominant streak of wins. Despite this, Verstappen remained optimistic about his team's prospects.

"Of course, we're not standing here as constructors' champions. In a way, I do think we deserved a little bit more in that championship. I tried my very best and we also know a lot where we have to work on for next year," he added. "I'm very excited about that as well because it does look like it's going to be a proper fight between a lot of teams."

Earlier in the day, the Dutch driver fulfilled an obligation to attend a grassroots motorsports development program with youth, serving as a public interest activity following a penalty for swearing during the Singapore Grand Prix in October.

Lando Norris of McLaren extended his congratulations to Verstappen, expressing eagerness to intensify their rivalry in the coming season.

Notably absent from the ceremony was Sergio Pérez, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, whose future with the team is uncertain after a lackluster season. Pérez did, however, receive the Action of the Year award for an impressive overtake in China.

The gala also recognized Brazilian F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto as the Rookie of the Year. Bortoleto is set to make his Formula 1 debut next year, driving for Sauber.

The event in Kigali showcased not just the pinnacle of automotive sport, but also the growing global reach and inclusivity of Formula 1, celebrating a season of high-octane competition and paving the way for future developments.
