Sergio Perez confirms commitment to Red Bull amid exit rumors at Abu Dhabi GP
As the Formula 1 season nears its climax at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing's Sergio Pérez has addressed swirling rumors about his imminent departure from the team, affirming his place for the upcoming season.
Recent reports suggested that Pérez might be on his way out of Red Bull post-Abu Dhabi GP, with speculations about a pivotal shareholders' meeting next week that could potentially influence his future with the team. However, Pérez firmly dismissed these claims.
"Nothing has changed since before in terms of what I've said for the entire year. I've got a contract for next year and I will be driving for Red Bull next year," Pérez asserted confidently. When pressed for further affirmation in light of the recent rumors, he reiterated, "I already said, mate. Nothing further to add. I have a contract for next year."
The Mexican driver's position at Red Bull has been a topic of discussion, especially considering the performance dip this season which saw the team falling behind in the constructors' championship. Currently, Red Bull trails McLaren by 59 points, and Pérez himself is significantly behind his teammate Max Verstappen in the drivers' standings.
Despite this, Pérez doesn't believe the responsibility for Red Bull's underperformance falls solely on his shoulders. "Of course, I take responsibility but also I don't feel it's fully all down to one person. I'm obviously part of a big organisation, a big team and it's very unfortunate that we did not fight any harder for the constructors," he commented.
Pérez also touched on the support from the team management, noting the decision to renew his contract signifies confidence in his abilities despite the challenges. “I think it's just important to stay in it together, because, like I said, the decision hasn't been the greatest but at the end of the day there's a reason why they renewed me and they know that I still can do it and that's an important factor," he expressed.
