Hamilton bids farewell to Mercedes with legacy intact

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend marks the finale of what has been a poignant and complex chapter in Formula 1 history, as Lewis Hamilton concludes his tenure with Mercedes. Spanning 12 years, over 246 races, achieving 84 victories, and clinching six drivers' championships, Hamilton's move to Ferrari in 2025 signifies the end of an era for the sport.

Despite the glittering success achieved together, the parting of ways between Hamilton and Mercedes has been tinged with a certain awkwardness. The unexpected announcement last winter of Hamilton's departure was a surprise to the team, initiating a protracted farewell year marked by challenges with the latest F1 car.

Yet, the season had its highlights, including an emotional victory at Silverstone and another at Belgium - a testament to Hamilton's undiminished skill and determination. Mercedes plans a fitting tribute to its departing champion in the days following the Abu Dhabi GP, celebrating a union that has redefined success in Formula 1.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff reflected on the transition, acknowledging the mixed emotions but emphasizing the collective achievement over the years, "It's been a bumpy year... But nothing is going to take away 12 incredible years."

The decision that shook the world of F1

Hamilton's decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari was as shocking as it was monumental, not least due to the manner in which it was communicated, through Carlos Sainz Sr, before a direct conversation between Hamilton and Wolff. The revelation came after a "one-plus-one" contract extension seemingly committed Hamilton to Mercedes until 2025, yet leaving an opening for early exit which Hamilton ultimately decided to take.

Reflecting on his decision, Hamilton spoke of the allure of Ferrari, a dream nurtured since childhood, and the challenge of reviving the storied team's fortunes. "It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make," Hamilton admitted, acknowledging the weight of his long history with Mercedes and his aspirations for the future.

Mercedes, while surprised, had prepared for such eventualities, with Wolff pointing to the foresight in their contract structuring and the impending promotion of Andrea Kimi Antonelli as factors underscoring the team's forward-looking strategy.

Hamilton's departure turns a page on a chapter of F1 history defined by dominance and innovation. His record alone is testament to his unparalleled success in the sport, characterized not just by statistical achievements but by a relentless drive to evolve and excel.

Hamilton's legacy: more than speed

Lewis Hamilton, the F1 superstar known for his lightning-fast laps, is nearing the end of his epoch-shaping tenure with Mercedes, but it's his off-track achievements that he holds in highest regard. Throughout his illustrious career, Hamilton has leveraged his colossal platform to champion social justice, environmental causes, and address the stark lack of diversity in motorsport.

In a notable gesture of commitment to these values, Hamilton established a £20 million charity called Mission 44 in July 2021, aiming to empower underrepresented groups by aiding their entry into engineering careers. His collaboration with Mercedes also birthed the Ignite initiative, which specifically targets increased diversity within the sport itself—a sport that, in its 75 years, has seen only one Black driver.

Reflecting over the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton expressed a deep sense of pride in these endeavors. "I think the thing I am most proud of and what I leave behind—I hope this is in a positive way—is the work we have done with diversity and inclusion," Hamilton noted.

This pioneering work in diversity was not a solo effort. It involved concerted efforts from the whole Mercedes team, including undergoing diversity and inclusion training. "From the first moment sitting down with Toto [Wolff], him being open-minded, the whole team being open-minded... We did Ignite and they really put their money where their mouth was and invested. We have a very diverse team now, which is something I am grateful to be a part of," Hamilton elaborated.

While the thrill of racing victories has its allure, Hamilton is aware that such triumphs are transitory. His lasting impact, he believes, will be the transformation he has fostered outside the racing circuits. Despite a recent dip in his performance, Hamilton remains dedicated to perfection and resilience, cherished aspects of his journey with Mercedes.

As the final race in Abu Dhabi looms, emotions are anticipated to peak, not just for Hamilton but also for the Mercedes team. Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, shared his sentiments in Qatar, stating, "It will be emotional... the closer it gets, the more emotional it will be."

Hamilton's imminent departure to join another team next year—a transition that marks the end of a monumental 12-year relationship—has stirred a mix of emotions and nostalgia. Wolff praised their long-standing bond, "We've had 12 years full of emotions of great moments, difficult moments that we conquered... Lewis' legacy will be Mercedes' legacy and the other way around."

Looking ahead, Hamilton feels at peace, confident that his affiliation with Mercedes will endure beyond his active career. "I'll always be a part of Mercedes' history," he affirmed.

As Hamilton prepares for his last showings as a Mercedes driver, the F1 world watches with appreciation, acknowledging that his contributions have indeed sped past the racetracks into the broader spheres of societal impact and cultural change.
