Sauber set to announce 2025 driver line-up by mid-November

In a significant development for Formula 1, Sauber is set to finalize its driver line-up for the 2025 season by mid-November, marking an initial milestone in the strategic roadmap laid out by newly appointed boss Mattia Binotto. The team is preparing to transition into the Audi works Formula 1 team by 2026, a change that comes with a tide of challenges but also opportunities.

The Swiss team, currently languishing at the bottom of the standings with five rounds remaining, has been unable to secure a championship point in over a year—a stark contrast to the heights the team has previously reached. Mattia Binotto, who took the helm in August, faces the formidable task of reinvigorating the team with substantial backing from Audi.

According to insiders, the team has been experiencing internal upheaval and morale challenges long before Binotto's arrival. However, equipped with his wealth of experience from his tenure with Ferrari, Binotto remains optimistic about his ability to lead Sauber through this transition.

Reflecting on his time at Ferrari, Binotto remarked, “When I started in Ferrari it was 1995. At the time, compared to expectations, we were far behind. It was many years that Ferrari was not winning.” He sees several parallels between his current endeavor with Sauber and his early days at Ferrari, during which he experienced a transformative era under the leadership of figures like Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher.

As part of Sauber's resurgence, Jonathan Wheatley from Red Bull will be joining as team principal next year. Binotto emphasizes the long journey ahead, acknowledging that creating a championship-contending team could take five to seven years, with an aim to compete for titles by 2030.

The decisions facing Sauber’s leadership extend to their driver selection. While Nico Hülkenberg is secured through 2026, his teammate remains undecided. Contenders include experienced driver Valtteri Bottas and rising talents like Mick Schumacher, Franco Colapinto, and F2 sensation Gabriel Bortoleto. Zhou Guanyu, currently racing for Sauber, presents a blend of experience and potential but is considered an underdog for the role.

"We know we’ve got a journey ahead of us, it’s going to be a long journey," Binotto stated, underlining the necessity of making strategic decisions that will fortify the team’s development. He spoke to the merits of both experienced and rookie drivers, each offering valuable perspectives and energy, concluding that a fair decision would be made no later than mid-November.

As the Formula 1 community anticipates Sauber's driver announcements, the focus now shifts to the strategic enhancements and developments that will shape the team's future under Audi’s anticipated banner.
