Ferrari’s renewed ambition: can they outpace McLaren and Red Bull for the title?

AUSTIN, Texas -- Ferrari's recent triumph at the U.S. Grand Prix has stirred significant excitement, raising questions about whether the iconic Italian team can finally claim their first championship since 2008. With Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz achieving a commanding 1-2 finish, Ferrari has moved within striking distance of McLaren in the constructors' standings.

Leclerc's optimism is palpable. "We've got to target winning the constructors' title," he proclaimed after the race. This declaration underscores Ferrari's renewed confidence and ambition, traits that have often been in short supply over the past decade.

Frédéric Vasseur, the team principal, acknowledged the near-flawless execution of the team while remaining cautious. "It was the perfect Sunday," Vasseur remarked. "We have done a very good job this weekend, scoring a lot of points, but we have to stay focused and not think we are champions just because of today's result."

The race dynamics played significantly in Leclerc's favor. An early skirmish between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen provided Leclerc with an opportunity that he capitalized on swiftly. Ferrari's strategy then enabled Sainz to overtake Verstappen, putting both Ferraris in top spots as Red Bull and McLaren engaged in their own battle.

"Our pace was always under control, as was the strategy with both drivers, and when you have the slight advantage we had today, it is much easier to do a good job," Vasseur added. The team's improved car drivability has clearly paid dividends.

Notably, Ferrari's success in Austin wasn't due to new upgrades. Vasseur had earlier described the sprint weekend as "a useful test for the upgrades we introduced at previous races," indicating that the team's upward trajectory is built on steady, cumulative improvements rather than sporadic leaps.

Reflecting on this, Leclerc noted, "We've said since two or three races [ago] in Monza, in Baku, in Singapore, we brought a few upgrades and we were always waiting for Austin because it was going to be the real test for those upgrades, and it seems to be working all good. So that is positive for the future."

He added, "It doesn't mean that we'll be having every Sunday the way it's been today, but it means that we are working in the right direction, and that can only be positive. So I hope we can reproduce these kind of results more often."

As the F1 season progresses, the question remains: can Ferrari maintain this momentum and challenge both McLaren and Red Bull for the constructors' title? With cautious optimism and solid performances, the famed Italian team is undeniably back in contention. The next few races will be critical in determining whether Ferrari's resurgence will culminate in a long-awaited championship.
