Red Bull's RB21: A Breakthrough After RB20 Re-evaluation

Red Bull Racing has made significant strides in the 2025 Formula 1 season, unveiling a new car design aimed at rectifying the handling challenges faced with the RB20 during the 2024 campaign. Technical director Pierre Waché, who has been with the team for several years, detailed how the team’s approach has shifted after a careful re-evaluation of the previous car. With a more stable and driver-friendly machine, the RB21 promises to enhance Red Bull’s performance across the grid.

Red Bull's Shift from RB20 to RB21

Despite securing another drivers' championship for Max Verstappen in 2024, Red Bull faced some struggles during the latter half of the season. The team’s car evolution led to balance issues that proved difficult for the drivers to manage, particularly in slow corners. The peaky characteristics of the RB20 created a car with immense potential, but it was often challenging for Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez to extract the maximum performance.

The team, led by Waché, has responded by introducing the RB21, a car that has undergone a full re-evaluation. The adjustments made aim to address these handling difficulties and make the car more user-friendly without sacrificing the overall performance. This re-evaluation process has been pivotal in allowing Red Bull to return to competitive form in 2025 after a difficult year in the Constructors’ Championship.

Understanding the Changes: A More Balanced Approach

Waché explained that the primary objective for the RB21 was to reduce the car's “peakiness” by making it easier for the drivers to control. The RB20’s high potential was difficult to harness, especially during slower corners, causing instability that hindered performance. The RB21’s new configuration aims to create a more predictable and consistent driving experience, allowing for a wider range of setups that can be explored throughout the season.

“We reevaluated all the concepts of the car,” Waché said. “We modified most of the stuff that is maybe not as visible as the older car – the concepts overall stay the same – but plenty of stuff has changed underneath and inside the car that, in terms of cooling, suspension, and the aero package, everything has changed to achieve the characteristics we like.”

The RB21’s development has also taken into account the need for more flexibility. With a broader range of setup options, the car offers more room for adjustments based on specific track conditions. The result is a car that, while fundamentally similar to the RB20, is easier to drive and offers better overall performance on a variety of circuits.

Max Verstappen’s Reaction to the RB21

Max Verstappen, who has been the backbone of Red Bull’s dominance over the past seasons, has voiced his satisfaction with the new RB21. The 2024 season, despite his fourth consecutive title, was a challenging one for Verstappen due to the difficulties presented by the RB20. With the RB21, he is enjoying a more predictable and responsive car, which promises to give him a more enjoyable driving experience in 2025.

During pre-season testing in Bahrain, Verstappen shared that the RB21 felt more comfortable to drive, particularly after the struggles of the previous year. With its improved handling characteristics and balance, the new car appears to be a step forward for the Dutch driver.

Development Challenges and Solutions

While the technical team has made significant changes to the car, the road to achieving the desired performance has not been without challenges. One of the key hurdles Red Bull encountered during the 2024 season was a discrepancy between the real-world performance of the RB20 and the predictions made using simulation data. This issue was particularly noticeable in the team’s wind tunnel correlation, where data did not always match up with the car’s actual on-track behavior.

To address this, Red Bull has invested in a new wind tunnel that is expected to be ready soon, which will hopefully resolve some of the simulation-to-reality issues. In the meantime, the team continues to work with their older facility, which has been in use since Red Bull entered Formula 1 in 2005. However, they remain optimistic that these issues have been addressed in the RB21, which is already showing improved performance during testing.

Adapting to Feedback: A Team Effort

The feedback loop within Red Bull has been critical to the development of the RB21. Waché and his team have learned from their mistakes, particularly in the last part of the 2024 season, where they showed improved understanding and performance. The team’s dedication to continuous improvement has been key in making sure the RB21 is ready for the challenges of the 2025 season.

Waché, however, remains grounded despite the improvements. “Confidence is not 100 percent,” he admitted. “But we have to use the tools we have and make the best decisions with the information we can control.” This philosophy of practical decision-making and a focus on teamwork underscores Red Bull’s commitment to improving with each passing year.

The Future: Red Bull's Long-Term Goals

Looking ahead, Waché expressed that his goal is not to create a personal legacy but to continue delivering success for Red Bull Racing. “My desire is not to make my name famous. My desire is to make the team winning. That’s it,” Waché explained. “It doesn’t change my life. What’s important is that the team continues to improve and remains at the top.”

With the improvements to the RB21, Red Bull is well-positioned to continue their dominance in the 2025 season and beyond. As the team adapts to the evolving demands of Formula 1, their commitment to continuous development and innovation remains clear, ensuring they will remain a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
