Racing driver Phil Hil: Formula 1 world champion and a true legend of the track

Phil Hill - 1961 (Ferrari)

Phil Hill was an American racing driver who became the first American-born Formula 1 World Champion in 1961, driving for Ferrar. Born on April 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, he grew up in Santa Monica, California, where he began his racing career as a mechanic for midget-car racing. Hill also excelled in endurance racing, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times and the 12 Hours of Sebring three times. He retired from Formula 1 racing in 1966 and later transitioned to automotive journalism. Despite his success, Hill was known for his modesty and avoidance of the spotlight. Hill passed away on August 28, 2008, leaving a legacy as one of America's greatest racing drivers.
